The return of the red tracksuits can only mean one thing.
Datarock are back in the fold.
Remember when the Norwegian collective first traversed the North Sea and smothered us with computer camp love? They were SO of the moment, a jump-suited hi-NRG David Byrne-worshipping disco punk juggernaut and perfectly snug zeitgeisty fit into the new rave bubble of mid-2006.
Going back on their unmaintained MySpace today is like diving through a timewarp to a very specific era, a time of NME New Rave Tours with Shitdisco and ‘Fa-Fa-Fa’ soundtracked iPod ads. It all beggars the question: how will Datarock return relevant in 2009?
Fortunately, the early signs are very promising indeed. According to lynchpin, part-time Club NME DJ and all-round hilarious good egg Frederick, they’ve “replaced Talking Heads, Devo and Happy Mondays as inspiration with Fela Kuti, Afrika Bambaataa and Kraftwerk” and this new track (remixed by Kissy Sell Out) reflects a shift forward, betraying a band that can chomp through the best afrobeat/punk-funk/disco/house/whatever of the last 30 years while still keeping it February 3, 2009.
As always, let me know what you think.
