Bored At Work? - The web's best time-killing links - The web's best time-killing links

By Luke Lewis

Posted on 24/09/08 at 01:44:23 pm

We've just launched an online poll to determine the greatest frontperson of all time.

iggy

What makes a great frontman or woman? Clearly, it's not just about vocal ability. Iggy Pop "sings" like a lobotomised donkey yet he's utterly magnetic onstage.

At the same time, if can't just be a question of flamboyant 'showmanship'. If it were, uninhibited berks like Justin Hawkins would dominate the field.

muse

Evidently, the quality we're looking for is a little harder to define – an alchemical mix of looks, charisma, virtuosity and sexuality. Just let's not call it the 'X factor', shall we?

In the mean time, here's the shortlist in full (and in no order whatsoever). Who have we overlooked? Moreover, who deserves to win? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Gotta be Matt Bellamy. Sexiest guy EVER, uber-talented, has a crazy dress sense, so much energy and he's one of the funniest guys in rock! Oh and he's frontman of the greatest live band of our generation.
pete donoghue [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 16:08
where is dave gahan!!!
chi [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 16:15
MATTHEW BELLAMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kid B [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 16:16
I'd have voted for Juanita Stein, if she were on the list. But seeing as she's not, I'll go with Thom Yorke.
Erin [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 16:21
Julian Casablancas, Brandon Flowers. Matt Bellamy or Jimi Hendrix
Toronto [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 16:25
Pete Doherty
Callum [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 16:36
is every1 fuckin mental? especially that kid above me. alex turner? hes got the charisma of a wet tissue. the best frontman, in terms of everything, is jim morrison, BY FAR. any frontman around today has something to do with morrison and his legend is HUGE. jack white winning the poll atm? shows the amount of absoloute idiots in the world.
michael nicolai [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 16:46
JIMI HENDRIX no doubt about it!!:D
uhuhuh [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 17:23

MEMEME [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 18:01
Matt Bellamy
Stubbsy [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 18:08
I just dont get the consistently blatant snubbing of Springsteen in every NME poll going. The fact he is not on this list renders it useless. Very few of the above can hold a candle. He is the greatest live performer and frontman there has ever been.
Jason [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 18:10
Bellamy's shit? Are you mad? I've seen a fair few bands in my time and none have his energy on stage! He has everything and doesn't just stand there banging a tambourine like most mediocre frontmen eg. Liam Gallagher. The guy is a fucking genius as well as being in the biggest band around today!
ellii [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 18:14
peter doherty
Alex *_* [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 18:22
matt bellamy, thom yorke, dave grohl and kurt cobain. BUT why doesnt any one mention JEFF BUCKLEY !
dave [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 19:17
Liam Gallagher...might not do much but hes got the charisma a rocknroll star needs frank carter is good too if you ever see gallows live
Mikey [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 19:22
It's got to be Zach De La Rocha. Anyone who saw Rage at Reading will agree with me, he wins hands down.
JAKE [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 19:33
Alex Turner-no contest!
Sammy [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 19:48
every1 here is insane. seriously. matt bellamy, muse biggest band today? hmm... of course they are. kol, oasis, radiohead etc. alex turner, bellamy, doherty, brandon????? there all terrible, lifeless idiots, pick someone classic, robert plant or jim morrison ftw, their stature and influence is unheard of, there'll be no-one copying matt bellamy.
sam [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 19:59
For me it has to be Alex Turner
[Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 20:04
can you please remove Tom Clarke's picture from the voting page-its making me feel sick every time I see it!
meets [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 20:13
Duh. Old Matt Bellamy, I'm talking about their Showbiz/Origin of Symmetry era. Amazing frontman, he's toned down a bit now, but still excellent!
1977 [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 20:16
Alex Turner has his head so far up his arse.....
Louise Tromans [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 20:36
James Dean Bradfield, you might as well give the award to him now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Poppy [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 20:56
Freddie Mercury!... Brandon Flowers :)
WahWah [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 21:05
From what I've seen and heard Matt Bellamy is a bit of a wizard. Can't think of anyone who comes close.
Jimmy Brasco [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 21:09
Robert Smith... easily.
kieran morgan [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 21:55
matt bellamy is the best ever- no-one can beat his skill and talent- vocals, guitar or piano- hes the best!
Shaunyeah [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 22:16
ian curtis or jim morrison, maybe morrisey. Why does everyone on this website have an obsession with muse? alex turner? grow up please!
Jock [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 22:18
Its so clear that its Iggy Pop its almost painful. Stage Diving and crowd walking weren't around before him, and the guy was willing to spill actual blood for what he loves. Just to add, The Stooges tore things up in a way thats still yet to be matched, and Iggy is still the finest at the age of 60. Can only be one. That said, the fanboism of Muse and Doherty fans will win the day.
Dean. [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 22:23
Pete Doherty? and Alex Turner? there good but c'mon Freddie Mercury...!
Jonathan [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 23:20
Matthew Bellamy, he gonna be even bigger then hendrix and thoose guys in the history books
legolegs [Visitor] //September 24 2008 at 23:34
annnd there all men - so no - patti smith - debbie harry - pj harvey - nico - joni mitchell - bjork - chrissie hynde - on and on and on ---instead we have oasis and the arctic mokeys - again - are you serious? nme sort it out
chrissyh [Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 01:11
i'm sorry, but matt belamy doesn't deserve a mention. period. morrissey must be so close for songwriting and the emotion he puts into it, and doherty, it must be said, runs him close for charisma for a contemporary, but strummer might nick it for what he acheived in a scene that was dying. count Iggy in there, too!!
RMP [Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 02:14
No Lennon!!!!!!!!!!!!
[Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 04:17
Jarvis Cocker of course! the way he snakes around on stage.....
Sammm [Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 04:48
Pffft watch HAARP and u see that there is only one option and that is Matthew Bellamy. Hes guitar spins, epic solos on piano and guitar are going to go far meanwhile he is head of the best live band around. Bono deserves a mention to
Yuri [Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 05:30
Morrissey, Robert Smith or Ian Curtis, please.
yusyusyus [Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 07:53
joe strummer is the best frontman of all time. no one else comes close. he interacts with the audience and makes you feel as ONE with him. full of passion and life. he is 4real. even richey manic knows that.
Duuuude [Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 08:30
Matthew Bellamy for his energy on stage

i liked alex turner until he formed that awful band: last shadow puppets, writing the name of the band makes me ill in itself. Alex; what have done?? i used to respect, bring out the new monkeys album asap, you have a chance to prove yourself once again. oh yeh Doherty is a twat but a good muscian x much love x

Nathan Williams [Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 13:32

Kenami [Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 16:17
tim wheeler of ash, the nicest guy of rock and the best song writer of all generations, las album was pure genius and come on 1977? if anyone doesn't think ash is class then your obviously a twat with not musical sense
Fabien Oman [Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 16:33
Both of Alex Turners bands are terrific and he's a real figurehead for our generation, but it's gotta be Matt Bellamy. Outrageously gifted guitarist and pianist, an operatic falsetto and absorbing performances
[Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 16:34
i'd say matt bellamy, tom meighan or alex kapranos, wtf is luke pritchard doing on tht list?
Fabien Oman [Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 16:36
But aren't Liam Gallagher and Julian Casablancas just living embodiements of rock 'n' roll?
brian [Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 16:50
hello did anyone say Mick Jagger? sure he is old but he showed us how its done!
Sally [Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 17:03
Perry Farrell and marylin manson have been the most entertaining front men i've ever seen. But Thom York and Eddie Vedder get it for most tallented and charismatic. And What about David Bowie - he's got to be up there!!
sam norrie [Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 17:07
has to be Ian Brown best front man i have seen live no doubt
Craw [Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 17:18

mitchell ingram [Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 17:25
liam gallagher surely for pure charisma! however i do not understand why there is no brett anderson or patti smith, on stage these two define cool
Alison [Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 17:32
No contest - it has to be Dave Grohl.
Matt [Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 17:41
Matt Bellamy for the win! He's clearly God!..Muse are the best live band around today and Bellamy puts so much energy into live performances. He may as well win anyway whether you like him or not because he is on practically every NME magazine cover and usually on NME's home page!!
Dave [Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 17:49

jaqueline [Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 18:15

'The Greatest Front-person Ever' does not exist, if they did we wouldn't be having a poll about it. What I will say though is Matt Bellamy definitely isn't the greatest front-person ever because he is a scrotum.

I don't have the time to read all comments but i think you're missing someone who has THE right to be on this poll: that man is Howlin' Pelle Almqvist from The Hives... This fella has so much of many things: Charisma, Entertaiment, a good Master od Ceremony and a Great style on stage and he knows is the best of the best band of the world (as we know to). Maybe he's wrong but the ATTITUDE counts so much... Greetings from Chile, South America. P.D.: i like most of the frontmans on the list but i think Pelle haves enough points on his favour to be here.
Mauricio Salinas (Chile) [Visitor] //September 25 2008 at 20:30

James Hetfield - one of the best rhythm guitar players of all time & a damn good front man. Axl Rose - love or hate him he's a great frontman. Zach De La Rocha - what more needs to be said?! - Robert Plant, Ozzy Osbourne, Jim Morrison, Steven Tyler, Lemmy & Dave Grohl are great as well. Are you kidding me with Morrisey?! Most boring man on the planet, also why include tosh like Alex Turner or Jonny Borell or Kele whatshisface?! They don't do anything except stand there and play? How is that a good frontman, a frontman has to be larger than life, not a statue! Also where the hell is Phil Lynott in that list?! Shame!!!!
Katrine [Visitor] //September 26 2008 at 10:52
John Robb from Goldblade is the best frontman I've ever seen. For sheer energy, connection with the audience, passion and pure wildness he's the man and he's sexy as hell as well!
[Visitor] //September 26 2008 at 11:34
JOE STRUMMER!!! no sweat

It's gotta be Ricky Wilson from the Kaiser Chiefs. I've seen them twice now and he has so much energy on stage it's unbelievable, plus he get's the crowd going.
jared boow [Visitor] //September 27 2008 at 20:39
i can understand bias by NME against the music of depeche mode- they've always received a hard time- but not to include Dave Gahan in the list is just ludicrous! He is one of the most entertaining, 'get the crowd going' frontmen i've ever seen- the trick is to do it to a crowd at a festival who aren't necessarily there to see you- i saw him as a solo artist in Manchester at the Move Festival in 2004, and the crowd seemed to be "who IS this guy??"...but within 2 or 3 tracks, with his infectious enthusiasm and 'come on join in' attitude (as well as a couple of DM tracks to help the crowd realise who he was)- he won them over to the point where the whole crowd was chanting- "we want Dave we want Dave"- and he actually encored!! Feeder on next were flat in comparison with no encore!! To me, that proves what a showman and great frontman Gahan is. He makes you want to wave your arms, dance and since your a*rse off!!!! come on NME, sort your stuff out!!!!

JIMI HENDRIX; FREDDIE MERCURY; JIM MORRISON; LIAM GALLAGHER; IGGY POP; KURT COBAIN; MORRISSEY; MICK JAGER; ROBERT PLANT; ZACK DE LA ROCHA. there's perhaps a few missing but i don't think the list of the 'greatest frontmen' can be that much bigger as there's a serious lack of frontmen in today's music scene.

Axl Rose is still an incredible frontman, despite all you 'Slash arse-lickers'. Iggy Pop is legendary for his performances. James Hetfield rocks as well. Freddie Mercury was an awesome frontman and Marilyn Manson always makes good use of the stage. Where's Alice Cooper though? You'd think he'd be up there with the kind of shows he puts on! I think in all this bile however Mick Jagger was mentioned twice!!!! Mick fucking Jagger for gods sake! The hives man was completely insane and has to be up there, along with the captivating Iggy pop! ridiculously good! Whoever said ricky wilson and expects to be taken seriously wants to fuck off and check themselves!!!! easy!

Bono; for his spectacular ability to switch between the 'serious' and 'ridiculous' and seemingly be equally at home doing both. And then of course his singing, he has a great rock voice but he also has soul. or Morrissey; for being able to 'sing his life' in the most passionate fashion. Then there's his BIGMOUTH, which strikes again and again and again, sometimes with hilarious and other times embarrassing results - but either way, he IS a personality that is very rare in pop/rock-music, and god bless him for it.
MAXoid [Visitor] //September 30 2008 at 10:52
I heard Matt Bellamy shaves his balls, so he can't be on there. A great front man has hairy balls. Great, Working Class Balls isn't it chaps? Hendrix wouldn't have shaved his balls.

colinbass [Visitor] //September 30 2008 at 15:31
Sting or Bono. There should be a requirement to this contest excluding anyone who hasn't been around for at LEAST 20 years, maybe 25, and still ALIVE. Oh, and someone whom people have actually HEARD OF. If we're talking "Best Frontperson Ever", isn't that a little akin to induction into the Rock 'N Roll Hall Of Fame? Young upstarts don't get in, no matter how good they may be. People, quit being stupid and voting for...oh my god, like totally...your favorite band RIGHT NOW! And spit out that nasty, sugary bubble gum.
Robinbrevard [Visitor] //September 30 2008 at 15:34
Now, do we *really* want Bono to lose this vote, and have to see him conduct a press conference -- vowing to remain on his knees, fasting, until the public grants him the title of "Greatest Frontperson Ever"? I think not. Let's save ourselves the agony, already, and just give it to him!! 8 - }

Let's be serious more than half of these people don't deserve to be on this list. 3 Greatest frontmen live and ever were obviously: 3. Iggy Pop 2.Jimi Hendrix 1. JIM FUCKING MORRISON I mean how the hell can you compare these 3 with mediocre shite like Johnny Borrell, Brandon Flowers, Ricky Wilson, Chris martin, Bono e.t.c. There's no way they'd have the balls to attempt the things Iggers,Jimi and Morrison used to do effortlessly.
ugh! [Visitor] //September 30 2008 at 17:27
clearly it's bono, but a more pressing issue is how Lennon is up for this. The Beatles had a front man? If they did, I think Ol' Mac at least deserves a shot at it.

What a silly question. Of course it's Bono. He's kept the band together over the years & is still married to his one & only wife & he's not frightened to shout it from the roof tops that he still adores her. No need for him to hang a different woman on his arm every few years like some I could mention, (Rod, are you listening?) There are a lot of people who say they dont like U2 but as soon as their tour hits town everyone wants a ticket! And he is the SEXIEST man alive.

it seems a majority of people are just picking their favourite band's frontmen. A good frontman is the most charasmatic and best shoman. most of the bands mentioned on this list are faves of mine, but i bet you that if you were to ask the current crop of bands, they would be telling you about those who inspired them - Mercury, Morrisey, Hendrix and more from these eras. These are the people that deserve this title (not Borrell, Bellamy or Barat - no matter how good they are)

There's bound to be a age thing here. For one thing, a lot of today's so called front people do not have the charisma or energy of days gone by. With that in mind - you have to look at John Lydon and Iggy Pop - both different, but both mesmerising - and both have stood the test of time! Probably a lot of younger people will not relate to that - but look back and think what these guys went through to get themselves heard. Very often, being in a band today does not come with the extra baggage these guys had to contend with.

Seeing that a solo act isn't exactly a frontman for a band since it involves the name of the person, you can eliminate a lot of these people. So I'd have to say, historically, Mick Jagger is probably the most recognised and greatest frontperson in a band ever.

It has to be Bono Bono of Irelans also known as Bono Christ, is the central figure of U2 and is revered by most Christian churches as the Son of God and the incarnation of God. Islam considers Bono a prophet. The principal sources of information regarding Bono' life and teachings are the four canonical gospels though some scholars argue that other texts (such as the Gospel of Thomas) are as relevant as the canonical gospels to the historical Bono.[4] Most critical scholars believe that ancient texts on Bono' life are at least partially accurate.[5][6] Most scholars in the fields of history and biblical studies agree that Bono was a Galilean Jew who was regarded as a teacher and healer. It is also generally accepted that he was baptized by John the Baptist, and was crucified in Jerusalem on orders of the Roman Prefect of Judaea Pontius Pilate, on the charge of sedition against the Roman Empire.[7][8] Aside from these few conclusions, academic studies remain inconclusive about the chronology, the central message of Bono' preaching, his social class, cultural environment, and religious orientation.[9] Christian views of Bono (see also Christology) center on the belief that Bono is divine, is the Messiah whose coming was prophesied in the Old Testament, and that he was resurrected after his crucifixion. Christians predominantly believe that Bono is the "Son of God" (generally meaning that he is God the Son, the second person in the Trinity), who came to provide salvation and reconciliation with God by his death for their sins. Other Christian beliefs include Bono' virgin birth, performance of miracles, ascension into Heaven, and future Second Coming. While the doctrine of the Trinity is widely accepted by Christians, a small minority instead hold various nontrinitarian beliefs concerning the divinity of Bono.[10] In Islam, Bono (Arabic: عيسى‎, commonly transliterated as Isa) is considered one of God's important prophets,[11][12] a bringer of scripture, and a worker of miracles. Bono is also called "Messiah," but Islam does not teach that he was divine. Islam denies the death and resurrection of Bono, believing instead that he ascended bodily to heaven.[13]

Out of those, it's easily Corey Taylor. I'm surprised he's there though, being a metal vocalist, and being part of a band that most people who read NME consider 'scary' at best. But, where's Amy Lee? She's got a fantastic voice, and although Evanescence haven't been active for a few years now, she still deserves a spot, in my honest opinion.

With a band such as U2, all the fucking frontman does is parade and concerntrate on image and leaving the much more talented members of the band in the spotlight. Bono my arse, the best frontman! Ha Got to say, I think Kurt Cobain is one of the greatest frotnmen of all time. Along with Matt Bellamy, Billie Joe Armstrong, Liam Gallagher, Robert Plant, Bruce Dickinson, Dave Grohl, James Hetfeild and Serj Tankian. But then again, I'm more into the rock/metal scene!

I’d go for John Lennon or Jack White. Lennon’s name speaks for itself, don’t think I need to be teaching anyone about his testament here on earth, and while trying to be objective about my whole comment here, though I of course admire Jack White myself, he has reached an amount of success and recognition only the fewest has been able to in such a short time perspective. Alongside his productivity with both bands and appearances with everyone else, I believe his crusade for the retrospective music has actually mended something very healthy to today’s music. Another reason to vote for him is that he’s always aiming at the sky with his work, and his passion for what he does is seldom. Not there you go - two guys with their hearts on the outside and that brings joy to ours.

I'm not a Queen Fan, but, being objective: Freddie Mercury is the Greatest Frontman on stage ever. Take a look in any of the live recorded shows... it's simply Magic!... Plant is a God, but Jimmy Page is also great and, sometimes, the real heart of the band. Bono is, maybe, the better Live experience by now, an alquemist of the stage. Dave Gahan, Björk, Scott Weiland, R. Smith, Moz, they're Masters of the Stage. But, what about younger people? I think Maja Ivarsson of The Sounds is a great experience, and Karen O, of course. But Freddie is the best. (Sorry for bad english, I'm mexican.)

Iggy Pop, Jeff Buckley, Jimi Hendrix, Matt Bellamy, James Hetfield, Axl Rose (at old good times,.,.,) Zack de La Rocha, Karen O, Bruce Dickinson, Robert Plant, David Lee Roth, Freddie Mercury, Jim Morrison, Steven Tyler, Billie Joe Armstrong, Bono, Jack White, Dave Grohl, Anthony Kiedis, Chris Martin, Lovefoxx, Julian Casablancas,.,.,., These are who I like most,.,., I think the voting should be like, well, I don't know! Maybe for decade!? For example, the best frontperson of 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000,.,.,. Forget about it, this fuckin'idea it's lame.,.,.,

don't know how the hell that moron spaceman from the muse got into the top 20 but there is no one best frontman. You have to contextualise it to the times and things that were happening when that band was around. In the 60's it has to be Lennon without a doubt. In the 70's its a mixture with Plant in the early part of the decade and then Lyden and Strummer in the secand half of the 70's. The 80's was crap so there was only one good lead man and that was Morrisey. The 90's was Cobain in the beginning and then for the rest of the decade has to go to Liam. Today, i think it goes to doherty.

I'm going to vote for Jack White I think... I know it's probably more 'right' of me to go for the frontmen of older generations because they were first, but I think it is equally 'wrong' to overlook those of the new generation. I think Jack fronting the White Stripes (when he fronts the Raconteurs he is nowhere near as charismatic or representative as when he is in the Stripes) he appears to be channelling an energy that is not of this earth. Whilst his guitar playing technically leaves a lot to be desired, as Alex Kapranos once said, he appears to plug it into his very soul. Dressed up in red and white with that airline strapped across his chest, it's easy to believe it's just an extra part of his body. The boy's not afraid to stick to his roots and honour them... He's gone a bit mental lately and perhaps has become a little overexposed... but nothing can put how I feel when he's on stage fronting the White Stripes out of my mind. There aren't enough female nominations... this makes me sad. I know I'm being hypocritical by nominaing a man, but still!

Dave Grohl, hands down. Like everyone else on this list he's a hell of a performer with a hell of a good band that puts on a hell of a great show. But, unlike most of his contemporaries, Grohl seems like a dude who would be happy just to hang out in some garage playing with crappy second-hand instruments and drinking cheap beer. This makes him the easiest rock star to relate to in the world. Dude seems like he'd be a blast to hang out with.
Wouldn't be on the list but... [Visitor] //October 10 2008 at 20:15

I would say either Axl Rose, Jim Morrison or Jimi Hendrix. I dont think you should have included some of the recent acts in the list, i wouldn't even consider bands like glasvegas in any kind of list like this. alot of the bands at the moment are mediocre, will never play to as many people as the greats or sell a fraction of the amount of records.
The Man [Visitor] //October 14 2008 at 14:09
Bono is a douchebag. Matt Bellamy should win. Zack De La Rocha, Jeff Buckley, Thom Yorke should be high up. Liam whats-his-face from Oasis should be in the minuses.

you have obviously overlooked 2 of the greatest frontmen in Chris Cornell and Phil Lynott, shame on you. So out of the options i'd have to say Hendrix, Jeff Buckley, Eddie Vedder, Jim Morrison or Caleb! and the winner best not be that prcik Morrisey hes sounds like a bloated whale!!!

Matt Bellamy kicks dirt in the face of all other frontmen. It's so painfully obvious that he doesn't even need to win. Sexy as fuck, insanely talented, out-of-this-world charasmatic and compelling. What's this bollocks I read above about him not qualifying 'cos he never talks to the crowd?! When you play and sing like he does, you don't sodding well need to. That man can stoke an audience into a frenzy with the raising of one arm, for Christ's sake. And some of these candidates were just added as joke, right?! Johnny Borrell?! That tool from the Kooks?! Period.

Has to be Lydon of course. As Sid says in the Filth and the Fury, he was the total anti-star. He was really snidey, danced robotically and generally took the piss out of everyone. And the crowd loved him for it. Unfortunatley people look at him today and they let that cloud their opion of him, they forget how utterly important he was and is to British music. Without the sex pistols and frontman Rotten, how many of todays bands would we have. When they played Manchester (x2) look how many bands they spawned... Buzzcocks (and derivatives) Joy Division (New Order), The Smiths, The Fall, and who can forget Mick Hucknell (Simply Red). 'I wanna be Anarchist, Get Pissed, Destroy!' indeed...

They don't call Springsteen "The Boss" for nothing. The last tour was truly inspirational - o.k he may be 59 but he is truly "Magic"
kaybar007 [Visitor] //October 20 2008 at 15:41
At the time of writing there are 18 mentions of Dave Gahan, so here's number 19!
Paul [Visitor] //October 20 2008 at 15:55
Another pointless list there are just too many missing for instance, 'Dave Gahan from depeche mode' one of the best front men in the business...
morrisseys hair piece [Visitor] //October 20 2008 at 16:15
The current standings are laughable. How is a bad carbon copy of Ian Brown #2? And Ian Brown himself isn't even in the top 20? Realistically Mick Jaggar (not that I was ever a huge stones fan) should be #1. He pretty much invented rock n' roll stage presence. My top 3 would definitely have to be Ian Brown, Morrissey and Mick Jaggar.

WHERE'S CEDRIC! Seriously, Mr. Bixler-Zavala for the win. Who else can combine the talent, the moves AND still "bring da sex" to the table. Still - Thom Yorke, Alice Glass, Lovefoxxx, Kele and Yannis are there. Oh! And CHUCK D. PUBLIC ENEMY! WOO!
osvalds [Visitor] //October 20 2008 at 19:54
oh come on, Dave Gahan, why is he missing??????????????????????????????????
chris [Visitor] //October 20 2008 at 20:05
the question is too broad. i assume the lead singer must have some broad appeal in the main stream. i vote for kurt cobain. he went out in a tragic flame while he was on top. (staged, it may have been)

Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode is way better then the media puppet's on your list. What 28 years and still no respect. The people on your list never sold out A stadium!
J Brandon [Visitor] //October 21 2008 at 02:17
Dave Gahan should be on the list too! He's the best front-man by far. No one else on this list even comes close!
Hmmm [Visitor] //October 21 2008 at 02:24
I know this goes back a ways, but I'll say OTIS REDDING. Short career, but the guy never, ever "mailed it in" on a performance.
Bill [Visitor] //October 21 2008 at 05:55
Where is Springsteen?? Liam,Lydon, Moz, even Bono, all good. But nowhere close to Bruce,,,,Strummer came close!

Ian [Visitor] //October 21 2008 at 19:39
Morrissey. More charisma than the rest added together.
laterals [Visitor] //October 21 2008 at 22:02
Obvious ommission - Ian McBunnyman. Massive charisma, four great albums (often voted no 1 in the end-of-year NME reader's poll), one of the best ever. Of today's gen, Johnny Borrell's got the legs to last over time. Time will prove it. Only Matt of Muse comes close. JB's got naysayers - but so had a lot of the other greats at the time (Lou, Jim...); you cain't suit everyone's taste (specially if they're used to drinking sh-te!). As for indie mediocrities ere like Paul Smith...hello? Editors aren't gonna change anyone's lives. Unless people haven't taken in what else is out there. Keke Okereke?! Some 'very good' stuff comin outta that band...but does no make for 'greatness'! And the Kooks...average little band, the 'Dodgy' of their era.
S [Visitor] //October 21 2008 at 22:17
it has to be Liam Gallagher.

TRUTH_crownTHEking_ [Visitor] //November 2 2008 at 17:54
Mick Jagger started it all. The prototype of a frontman - he created it, he created himself - the figure. so, it's pointless to let this crown belong to anyone else. elvis shook his hips a bit, jagger embodied sex. and he's STILL going strong at the age of 65. i think he deserves the crown. he makes people like bono look pathetic.

two words... JUSTIN HAWKINS. you say he isn't saupposed to be in the list because of his 'unhibited flambouyance' yet you go on to describe what you're looking for in the ultimate frontman/woman, that being; looks, charisma, virtuosity and sexuality. Ironically, I think there you managed to sum up the same 'flambouyance' you use to tout Hawkins, and pretty much put Hawkins at the top of the list yourselves. He is EASILY the most charismatic, virtuous in his technical ability (just recorded and released a whole album on his own - touring USA March 2009) he's not what you would call 'good' looking but definately has a face you won't forget in a hurry, and the charts haven't seen anyone question the blurs between sexuality quite like Justin has shown us in his tenure in the public eye. And you have the nerve to shortlist Vince fucking Neil??! Just like NME to be judging a frontman/woman on issues such as 'looks' and 'charisma' before virtuosity. New Musical Express? Bollocks.
Sim [Visitor] //July 22 2009 at 08:22

Overall jimi hendrix! when i look at videos of him playing its like he is just at peace when he is playing and he played what he wanted to hear. And well my other Favorite frontman would be Matthew Bellamy cause the music that he makes with Muse is just so epic and moving and when Muse play live it is 1000 times better than recorded songs!!! =]
