When it was announced that Madonna would be paying tribute to Prince at this year’s BBMAs, someone started a change.org petition titled “Stop Madonna from being the only artist tributing Prince during the Billboard Awards”. Though the petition attracted fewer than 10,000 signatures, it succeeded in starting a debate as to whether the Queen of Pop was an appropriate or even worthy choice to perform in Prince’s honour. As it turned out, Madge really did the Purple One justice on the night, taking to the stage in a very Princean purple suit and delivering a heartfelt and totally gimmick-free rendition of ‘Nothing Compares U’. She was then joined on stage by Stevie Wonder, whose appearance had not been announced in advance, for a stirring version of ‘Purple Rain’ which got the whole of Las Vegas’s T-Mobile Arena singing along. In the crowd, Rihanna and The Weeknd could be seen bopping as thousands around them waved purple glowing wristbands above their heads. At the end of Madonna’s touching tribute to her friend and collaborator, she told the crowd: “Thank you, Stevie. And most of all, thank you Prince Rogers Nelson for all that you’ve given us.” Watch the full eight-minute performance below.
