The Shockwaves NME Awards Big Gig 2009 took place last night (February 26) at London's O2 Arena. 15,000 fans turned up to worship at the alter of Godlike Geniuses The Cure, who played a career-spanning, 90-minute set of their favourite tracks.

In support were Franz Ferdinand, Crystal Castles and White Lies.

Below are photographer Jacob Perlmutter's images from the night.

Grab this week's NME magazine for a free The Cure covers CD that comes in a special Awards souvenir box set.

I was there! It was the best gig of my life so far, but unfortunately due to London's terrible train service, I ended up missing the last 15 minutes to catch the train, which was incidently 15 minutes late...

This was one of the most disappointing gigs I have ever been to. White Lies were however wonderful. The sound quality for Crystal Castles meant that we could not hear the strange girl singing for most of it - which was lucky because when the sound was turned on it was hideous. Franz Ferdinand gave us an incredible mini-gig which was the absolute highlight and they managed to warm up the crowd who were sitting/standing open mouthed from watching a girl with no eyebrows writhe around on the stage. Eventually the Cure came on.... There seemed to sing the same song over and over again - with only a few of the classics in the list. I do not care whether he played them 24 hours previously - We had all paid to hear the hits - I have never been to a gig where so many people left half way through the main act. I am still a fan but bitterly disappointed with them.

What a night, probably the best gig i've ever been to in London! White Lies and Franz Ferdinand were interesting but i was there for one band and one band only, THE CURE!! They were everything they were supposed to be on the night, powewful, passionate, eclectic....i dont know why some people keep harping on about people leaving during their set, as far as i can recall the venue was still full to capacity by the time they finished, they need to get their eyes tested!

katie ,, bollocks - your obviously deaf and if you didnt recognise the songs not much of a fan as they played nothing remotely obcure, it was fab ,, if you wanna just hear hits then play the fuckin cd at home .. from where i was standing it didnt look like many left either

i agree with Katie Robinson, i missed a day off school for this and travelled a long way - White Lies were breath taking and Franz Ferdinand were alot of fun! Crystal Castles really dissapointed me, well the singer did, what was she doing? To be perfectly honest, i thought she was rubbish! and bieng a young Cure fan, i was expecting all the well-known hits somwhere in their set, and i only heard a few! they are one of the most infuential bands in the world and i ended up leaving early with alot of the crowd too! x

Katie Robinson is spot on (although I quite like Crystal Castles).

Unfortunately I missed White Lies but I thought Crystal Castles were pretty ace. Not a fan of Franz Ferdinand and can’t see why they were supporting… But like Katie Robinson I was disappointed with The Cure. I’m a big fan and they performed really well, but their choice of songs really wasn’t that great. I wasn’t expecting them to play all their hits but where was Close To Me, The Caterpillar, Friday I’m in Love, Lovecats…? Generally you see a band live to hear the songs you love. I could also see from where I was sat the amount of people that were leaving throughout the main act. We didn’t even see the encore, we just joined the queues trying to get home.
steve [Visitor] //March 2 2009 at 17:31
ahhhhh so you guys all left because you had to get up fr school? i understand now
CC [Visitor] //March 3 2009 at 23:21
fake curefans wanting thinking that there were obscure songs being played. Go buy Staring At The Sea or Greatest Hits or maybe just stick to Lovecats and Friday I'm In Love. Jesus wept.

The pictures were great. However, The Cure were headlining! Why only one pic of them, and of one member (albeit Rock God Porl!)? And kind of a poor pic of him at that.
Cheri [Visitor] //March 4 2009 at 17:59
...Ellie, in stating your a younger Cure fan, that's fine. But to expect them to only play songs that you personally know...doesn't make you a Cure fan. They've been crowned Godlike Geniuses for reasons much stronger than the likes of 'Boys Don't Cry' etc... :)
Sam [Visitor] //March 5 2009 at 21:07
crystal castles are fucking awesome. i love them live, and on the CD. this venue however, was terrible - and the sound quality was HORRIBLE. crystal castles aren't bad - this venue was.

Loved the Cure, great White Lies, good Franz Ferdinand, terrible castles and yes she threw up, disgusting to think Robert Smith was going to walk up there soon! The Cure are the best, forever
Faye [Visitor] //March 17 2009 at 10:00
Crystal Castles... pants! Robert Smith... God-like Genius!
steven [Visitor] //March 17 2009 at 23:11
