You could make a case for 2008 being the year of The Gaslight Anthem. ‘The ’59 Sound’ seemed to come out of nowhere but was so loaded with glorious tunes it became a lot of people’s favourite record in no time at all. And off the back of it Gaslight are going to do something that would have seemed unthinkable this time last year: support Bruce Springsteen this summer in Hyde Park to roughly 3million people. And this is something rather special: an exclusive heart-breakingly gorgeous rendition of ‘The ’59 Sound’’s opening track ‘Great Expectations’. Click below to download it; I promise, it’s that special kind of wonderful very few bands can manage.

Recorded at the Explore Music studio in Toronto, this is the first airing of this special version of 'Great Expectations', and I think it shows why so many people fell in love with them. Tender, understated but still playfully melodic, the original kicked the album off in sterling style. But this naked rendition confirms Brian Fallon's talents as a songwriter: anyone can write a big ol' rock song and get it produced to sound like some kind of drivetime classic, but to go from that right back to just being one dude onstage with a guitar and a whole lot of feelings? That takes some serious guts, and ability.

So here's hoping Gaslight can take their momentum and really do something special with it. The Hyde Park show is their first real attempt to crack the massive stages, but the last three times I've seen them they've played practically the same set every time. Which is ace and all, because those tunes rule, but what I'd really like to see is the beginnings of a third album that delivers on all the promise they've built up thus far. And yeah, it's because they've basically been on tour non-stop for a year, but Gaslight are a band who are not only capable of making the world seem different with a single chord change but one beloved of a LOT of people.

Are you a Gaslight fan? Old- or new-school? Or mid-school (er, you got into them via 'The Senor And The Queen' EP)? Are you looking forward to the new material or do you think their first record's their best?

I'm "new-school", having got into them only last year, but I bought Senor and The Queen first. I love this band, cheers for the track!

They're one of my favourite bands, and I'm always looking for acoustic versions of their songs, makes them even better... It's amazing, really.

I got into them through a friend who lent me a copy of their first album 'Sink or Swim', but for me the latest album is really what marks them out as being the best band coming out of America right now.

I got all their CD's for Christmas (Cheers Big Bro) and Sink Or Swim is great. But The '59 Sound? Wow! Five Star Album all the way

Sink Or Swim is an awesome album, the EP is really good but not keen on the 59 Sound at all.

So there's quite a divide between people who like Sink Or Swim' and those who prefer 'The '59 Sound'? Interesting - to those of you who prefer one over the other, what is it about that album that you love so much?

It's amazing to see this band grow in front of your own eyes from one of the million underground bands to the flagship of punk scene. And their ability to stay down-to-earth in interviews and tour constantly for a 3rd year wins my heart:) I like both albums and EP, but can easily understand why people prefer Sink or Swim. It's an explosion of energy in your head. Raw but so confident. No tricks. Straight to the heart. "The '59 Sound" is a stylish record. More complete. The one to talk about. Trendy in some way. Less guts. Still fantastic.

I really like the way that the E.P. is such an obvious transition between 'Sink Or Swim' and 'The 59 Sound'. The latter record was such a perfect move after the E.P.

all their records are jokes, most consistent punk rock n roll band going, literally cannot wait to see them at reading, and for new material!

best cd of last year. This song stripped down is so stonking!

I just started to listen to them like three weeks ago and I cant turn off all of their records and acoustic and live show that I have on my Ipod. Their amazing. Im a huge Springsteen fan and this guys are gonna shock every Boss follower in High Park. Im more of a 59 sound kind of guy than the first record, but I cant say that its worse cause they are both amazing. With The Hold Steady The Gaslight are two of the best american bands right now (being My Morning Jacket another). Greetings from Santiago, Chile

Old school? New School? [Visitor] //June 6 2009 at 17:50
honestly you can differentiate between new school or new school quite yet, they haven't been around long enough! So everyone is new school right now haha, I've been listening to them since August 26, 2008 (exactly 1 week after the release of The '59 Sound) Yes...I'm a crazy fanboy lulz they are THE best band EVAR
