South African DJ Mujava - real name Elvis Maswanganyi - sounds like a marching band powering through a Space Invaders game and 'Township Funk' is his masterpiece, embedded below.
Mujava's break landed when taxi drivers, who act as independent grassroots music distributors in South Africa's urban townships, started punting CDs of the music they'd heard him play on community radio across Pretoria. Spreading his sound though their cab stereos, they eventually started selling his music directly to their customers.
Now Mujava is signed to This Is Music Ltd in the UK (home to Simian Mobile Disco, A-Trak, Frankmusik, Little Boots and grindcore-electro pioneers Fake Blood, amongst others) and Warp records internationally.
