Isle Of Wight: The Best Bits Of The Weekend

11/06/07 11:28:08 am

Now the sun has finally set on the Isle Of Wight festival, and we're back safe and sound on the mainland, it's time to reflect on a weekend in which we danced, we laughed, we drank and some of us even cried.

Top sleb spot had to be a toss-up between a face-painted Pete Dhoerty and wrinkly comedy legend Griff Rhys Jones. The funniest moment? Mick Jagger revealing himself to be a man of the people, complaining about the price of water on-site. And the musical highlights? Well let's see...

Isle Of Wight: Paint It Wight

You can’t always get what you want, some hoary old guffers once said, but Sunday at Isle Of Wight thoroughly disproves that theory. You can get a more rocking set from Keane you can ever imagine, you can get Mel C racing around near where you’re writing all your blogs and you can get to realise that you are way more fragrant than the stars – both Ian McCulloch and Noel Fielding were spotted wearing the same clothes today that they were wearing all weekend. Result.

What else did we spot? Pete Doherty with Stones lick logos printed all over his cheeks. Kate Moss freaking out about arriving late and not having an underpaid lackey on standby to usher her to the prime spot on the site. Amy Winehouse, onstage with the Stones, completely forgetting the words to ‘Aint Too Proud To Beg’. Mike Skinner, still ingnito (i.e., he had his hoodie up) on the ferry back to the mainland. Sienna Miller being way too small to be true. Lily Cole being way too tall to be true. Gryff Rhys Jones and Rory McGrath adding some comedy to the backstage area.

Funniest of all was And Mick Jagger pretending to be down with ‘the kids’: “It’s so expensive here! Two quid for a water, four quid for a burger…” . We’ll happily offer a prize of one million pounds to the first person to send in a photograph of Mick queueing at any of the burger stands onsite to prove that he definitely wasn’t in the Bahamas until five minutes before the set, and definitely didn’t dine out on the glorious catering The Stones had flown in specifically for the gig.

Sorry for the spelling mistakes, I write this on the M3, in the back of Andy Wilsher’s legendary festival Charabanc, drinking red wine and dodging the rozzers. Wild horses? Well, hammered hacks...

Or the Virgin Hospitality tent as it's known - right now size zero superfittie Lily Cole is wandering around with Sienna Miller and Anna Friel slurping free cocktails like they're going out of fashion. Strangely they don't seem that interested in the range of cholesterol packed angus burgers on offer at the buffet.

Isle Of Wight: Stones inside info!

Just spoke to Paolo Nutini, and not only was he utterly charming, but he was just coming back after rehearsing with The Rolling Stones.

Yep, he will be guesting with the legends tonight, and told us that he will be singing on the band's cover of Robert Johnson's 'Love In Vain'. Apparently when they were doing a quick run through Charlie Watts had to have his memory jogged as to how the track sounded, he had no recollection of it at all. They did record it for the classic 'Let It Bleed' album back in 1969. But that was a very long time ago.

He also referred to the band's other guest, Amy Winehouse, who has also played here this weekend and has long been rumoured to be joining them, as "the madame". Apparently she's going to be warbling her way through a cover of The Temptations' 'Ain't Too Proud To Beg'. Apparently she didn't want to rehearse.

That, as we say in the business, is an exclusive. Cheers Paolo.

Isle Of Wight: NME Meets The Stones!

10/06/07 05:18:22 pm

Well, kind of. Our esteemed News Editor Paul Stokes called me, practically hyperventilating, because he's just "met" Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards.

Well, what actually happened is he and snapper Andy Willsher were on their way for a drink when security stopped them - to allow Keith and Ronnie a clear path on their way to catch a bit of Paolo Nutini.

Apparently the rock legends arrived by boat earlier, though a local resident told us Mick Jagger was going to be delayed because he "wanted to see the island". Fair enough, it's very pretty.

Speaking of which, cheeky Scots warbler Nutini has the 'Rocky' theme as his intro music. Good choice, but wholly inappropriate in this context, we reckon. Still, if Keith and Ronnie are into him he must be good, right?

The celeb count has gone up, presumably due to tonight's headliners - as well as the weekend mainstays like Noel Fielding and Anna Friel, today we've spotted Sienna Miller (as with all these Sun newspaper sex symbols, absolutely tiny) and Kate Moss is also confirmed to show. Now there's a surprise. She'd go to the opening of an envelope, that one.
