Five of the Best

23/07/07 11:41:31 pm

It's over, we're home, and if our heads aren't quite back where they should be yet, we do know that Benicassim rocked, again. Sure, that might be because of the idyllic location, and through-the-night scheduling gives Fib a unique old-skool rave buzz that you just don't get at any other festival. But all of that wouldn't mean much without such a staggering-line up.

Being basically a beach holiday, you don't go there to expand your indie horizons. Instead you get a shamelessly fun-filled mix of novelty and heritage turns and bona-fide crowd-pleasing living legends. Here's our pick of our five favourites.

1. MUSE
An obvious choice only because it's the only choice. Muse just make it look so easy now. Stripped of the flying acrobats and satellite dishes of the Wembley shows, their climax to another amazing Fiberfib was as stripped-down as it's possible for stripped-down gargantuan space rock to get - proving that the real pyrotechnics at work were the songs.

2. ARCTIC MONKEYS
As they build up to their own super-shows at Lancashire County Cricket Club this weekend, the UK's other stars of the summer had the advantage over their Glastonbury show that you could actually hear it. No fancy-dress costumes, but they've taken the leap to headline status plainly in their stride.

3. IGGY AND THE STOOGES
Every year there's an solid gold living legend, and even though they've been doing the rounds plenty this year already, theystill made our privates all-aquiver. And the stage invasion (or "stage invitation" as Iggy called it when we spoke to him) was easily the weekend's best moment.

4. BRIGHT EYES
Conor Oberst and crew brought their greatest tour ever to a sublime climax as Benicassim cranked into life on Thursday night. His white-suited band recharging some of his bitterest oldies, and softer-centred new stuff has been one the best things to come out of the States this year.

5. THE HUMAN LEAGUE
Easily the most fun out of the slew of 'novelty' acts this weekend (though special mention has to go The B-52s), but with a sweaty tent swathed in lasers and robopop synths that still sound futuristic, guilty pleasures have never felt so cool.

The Go Team @ FIB 2007

NME.COM catches up with The Go Team @ FIB 2007. Watch the video here to see the Brighton party-starters talk about why Spanish crowds are "aggro", how their Summer has been a Euroblur and why they're a word of mouth band....

Bellamy's epilogue

23/07/07 02:40:23 am

Behold the finish line! UNKLE are playing 'Burn My Shadow' right now, and in minutes the live turns will be all but over. It's been another awesome Benicassim, and the best was of course saved til last. We don't need to tell you how amazing Muse were. But if you check back tomorrow, we'll let you know our pick of the top turns of the weekend once the dust has settled.

But for now, we'll leave the last word to Matthew himself.

Goodnight, and Good Luck.

Team Gash take Benicassim

There isn't really any way to introduce this chapter. Except to admit that, of course, they're British. For shame.

Some mad folk

23/07/07 02:34:25 am

The measure of a great festival is how certifiable the punters are. And Benicassim would come out winning even without the spectacular array of bands and B-52s. Here's some folk getting messy with some inflatable guitars.

Plug In Baby

Muse are currently storming the main stage, big blow up bubbles at the ready, classical piano and confetti galore, but the real hit of the evening for me was Kings Of Leon earlier. During one of their longest sets ever, they effortlessy knocked out 'Knocked Up', 'Mollys Chambers', 'My Party' and an astonishing 'McFearless'. Quite how that drummer drives them whilst chewing gum and looking like he's about to fall asleep is beyond me. I met Jared after, and he was suitably chuffed. The Go! Team shook the dance tent into submission with the help of 'Ladyflash' and some green lasers, and much earlier Amy Winehouse astounded us by A) turning up and B) being sober. Her motown backing singers get cheesier by the second however.
