I might as well just admit it. I don’t really like any music made after 1993. Not only that, but I don’t really like any music that wasn’t made in Boston, New York, or the Pacific North West of America. Oh, and there’s very, very little music I like that wasn’t made by people who smell / wear plaid. To be honest with you, I really kinda think that music died come side two of the first Midway Still record.
Consequently, I’ve been having the time of my life these last few years. I’m 29, so I never got to see Dinosaur Jr, Slint, Sebadoh, The Lemonheads, the Pixies and Buffalo Tom first time round. Even Scarce – the great lost US indie rock band of the ’90s – are getting back together for a bunch of shows next month. I’m definitely one of the few people at NME who doesn’t mind the endless glut of reunions that have been a defining trend in ’00s music. In fact, I want more: can we have a ‘Live Through This’ era Hole reunion? A new Superchunk record? Another Fugazi tour? To paraphrase Lou Barlow: “Gimmie (more) indie rock!”
