Arctic Monkeys at V Festival 2011 - full gig report and setlist

Who: Arctic Monkeys.

Where and when: Virgin Media Stage, Sunday 21 August.

Arctic Monkeys

Vibe: Surly, but sure-footed. With stellar support from a tub of Brylcreem (see: Alex Turner’s new teddy-boy haircut).

Arctic Monkeys

Banter: “We’ve brought some of that rock ‘n’ roll music for you, get yer dancing shoes on!” Alex makes like a Butlin’s holiday rep circa 1958.

Best song: The electric take on ‘505’. A better set-closer you will not find in all of festivaldom.

Worst moment: No room for ‘From The Ritz To The Rubble’ ‘ Cornerstone’ et al, sadly.

Verdict: After forty eight hours of being instructed to “MAKE SOME FACKIN’ NOOOOIIISE” the Monkeys’ softly-softly approach fails to catch on with some of the crowd. But for everyone else it was a great opportunity to see the band at the height of their live powers.

Rating: 8/10
