Who: Dizzee Rascal

Where: Sunday, 4Music Stage, Staffordshire

Vibe: Fighting against the pull of the Arctic Monkeys, Dizzee drew in his dedicated fans and a large group of Sunday night stragglers. The warm up dj provided an essential dosage of ‘Jungle Is Massive’, teasing out the inner grime child in all of us. Dizzee’s high energy set with wingman Scope, spanned from the wailing of ‘Sirens’ to the fresh new track ‘Bassline Junkie’. Grime never sounded so good, blaring through the Staffordshire hills.

Best bit: “Some people think I’m bonkers…”, it’s the unadulterated pop that gets the biggest response, it’s just so darn good.

Low point:With pints of piss thrown from all directions, it was only a matter of time before one of us took a direct missile to the face.

Banter: Following the announcement of his sobriety earlier this year, Dizzee shouts, “Some people like to drink, some people like to take drugs, I’m a ‘Bassline Junkie’”

Verdict: Dizzee struck a fine festival balance between his catalogue of polished pop hits and monstrous grime tracks. His rapid lyrical flare can’t be faltered and neither can the tactile bass be ignored. His dominance over the no man’s land between grime and pop is still a force to be reckoned with.
