The 30 Day Song Challenge has taken Facebook by storm, with hundreds of thousands of people sharing the tunes that have special meaning for them.
Here, Alex Gaskarth – singer with Maryland pop-punkers All Time Low – gives his own answers to the challenge. Feel free to add your own as comments below
Day 1: your favourite song
Wow… It’s hard to pick a favorite song, but I’m going to go with ‘Blinded’ by Third Eye Blind- such an incredible story in those lyrics.
Day 2: your least favourite song
‘Shake It’ by Metro Station. It’s a good pop song but it drives me up a wall every time I hear it.
Day 3 – a song that makes you happy
‘Animal’ by Neon Trees gives me that warm fuzzy feeling inside.
Day 4 – a song that makes you sad
I think ‘Eleanor Rigby’ by The Beatles and ‘Folding Stars’ by Biffy Clyro might be two songs that could actually bring me to tears in the right moment.
Day 5 – a song that reminds you of someone
Every song reminds me of something, be it a person, place, or just a feeling I once felt. ‘Futures’ by Jimmy Eat World reminds me of driving around my hometown with Jack in the summer, right after I got my licence.
Day 6 – a song that reminds you of somewhere
‘Dancing Through Sunday’ by AFI reminds me of being in Park City, Utah, snowboarding with my friends back in the day. Good times.
Day 7 – a song that reminds you of a certain event
It probably sounds cheesy but ‘Time of Your Life’ by Green Day always reminds me of graduation. After the ceremony, I think I heard about 40 cars leave the parking lot blasting that song. It was like something out of a movie.
Day 8 – a song that you know all the words to
‘Monkey Wrench’ by the Foo Fighters. We played it at soundcheck almost every day on our recent UK tour. Stoked to play with them at some festivals this summer.
Day 9 – a song that you can dance to
‘Billie Jean’ by M.J. Gets me in the groove!
Day 10 – a song that makes you fall asleep
I love falling asleep to Imogen Heap records. There’s always so much going on in her production, and focusing in on the subtle details feels like counting sheep. Very peaceful.
Day 11 – a song from your favourite band
‘Dammit’ by Blink 182. They’re the reason we’re a band and we used to close with that song when we were first starting out. It will always have a special meaning to all four of us.
Day 12 – a song from a band you hate
I don’t really hate any bands, so it’s a tough one to answer. I guess I could live without hearing ‘Mambo Number 5’ ever again.
Day 13 – a song that is a guilty pleasure
‘Gotta Be Somebody’ by Nickelback. I was on the side of the stage at Summersonic when they were playing and was on my phone. Chad walked up, kicked me and said “No texting during our set!” I think he was joking. Either way, I love it.
Day 14 – a song that no one would expect you to love
‘Baby’ by Justin Bieber… I don’t love it but I’m pretty sure no one would expect me to either!
Day 15 – a song that describes you
‘Big Casino’ by Jimmy Eat World.
Day 16 – a song that you used to love but now hate
It’s always a bummer when this happens… I swear I was in love with ‘Rockstar’ by P!nk. Then I realized that the lyric was, “So, So What?” and from that day forward, I couldn’t back it.
Day 17 – a song that you hear often on the radio
‘S and M’ by Rihanna seems to be everywhere at the moment.
Day 18 – a song that you wish you heard on the radio
‘Tell Me I’m A Wreck’ by Every Avenue. They’re friends of ours, and it’s an amazing song. It got some radio play back in the US but not nearly enough.
Day 19 – a song from your favourite album
‘Dumpweed’ by Blink 182. It’s the first song off ‘Enema’ and the second I hear it kick in I get pumped and want to kick things over.
Day 20 – a song that you listen to when you’re angry
‘The Fight Song’ by Marilyn Manson is truly the perfect song to let all of your frustrations out to. I beat up small, fluffy animals to this song.
Day 21 – a song that you listen to when you’re happy
Anything by Sublime! They’re the perfect soundtrack to a happy summer’s day.
Day 22 – a song that you listen to when you’re sad
‘Why Can’t You Be’ by Third Eye Blind. A cool perspective, and another lyrically interesting journey to help a somber spirit.
Day 23 – a song that you want to play at your wedding
‘I’m Yours’ by Jason Mraz. It’s just such a simple and beautiful song that would sum up the spirit of the day.
Day 24 – a song that you want to play at your funeral
‘If You’re Happy And You Know It’ by whoever wrote that song. If anyone claps, they’re being taken out of my will.
Day 25 – a song that makes you laugh
‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ by Queen always makes me giggle. It’s a great concept for a song.
Day 26 – a song that you can play on an instrument
‘Master Of Puppets’ by Metallica was one of the first songs I learned to play on guitar. Sick riff!
Day 27 – a song that you wish you could play
Any All Time Low song… I just haven’t gotten any of them completely down yet. Hah!
Day 28 – a song that makes you feel guilty
‘So Yesterday’ by Hilary Duff. I feel guilty because I know I shouldn’t be listening to it… But I can’t stop.
Day 29 – a song from your childhood
‘Wouldn’t It Be Good’ by Nick Kershaw was played around the house quite frequently. You’ve gotta love the late 80’s, early 90’s gold that came out of the UK. The music video was just ridiculous.
Day 30 – your favourite song at this time last year
‘Alejandro’ by Lady Gaga. There’s something so captivating about the references to Ace Of Base in that song. Gaga really did a great job of channeling that influence into a smash! It was also very cool to cover last year on Live Lounge.
