American Music Awards 2015 – The Nine Biggest Talking Points, From Coldplay’s Monkeys To Meghan Trainor’s Snog

Last night, Jennifer Lopez hosted the 43rd American Music Awards at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Here are the best bits.

1. HARRISON FORD’S TRIBUTE TO JOHN WILLIAMS
Harrison Ford was a surprise guest, appearing straight after an exclusive Star Wars clip was shown. Initially paying tribute to legendary film composer John Williams, the actor then introduced a cappella group Pentatonix, who are just awful.

2. MEGHAN TRAINOR AND CHARLIE PUTH’S SNOG
Meghan Trainor and Charlie Puth have already snogged on their video for ‘Marvin Gaye’, but in a bid to be the outrageous talk of the town, they also snogged during their live performance of the song. A bit like when Madonna kissed Britney at the 2003 VMAs, only entirely unremarkable.

3. COLDPLAY’S DANCING MONKEYS
Coldplay’s Chris Martin recently said, “I don’t want to obscure our music behind coolness or cynicism just to avoid criticisms.” If that means having cheery, colourful dancing monkeys – mission complete.

4. ARIANA GRANDE’S ‘FOCUS’
In contention for best performance of the night was donut-licker Ariana Grande, with a vocal-perfect rendition of her latest single ‘Focus’. She begins with Jessica Rabbit-style swing and ends with her standard sax-backed pop, while traversing a huge, musician-covered set.

5. CELINE DION’S TRIBUTE TO PARIS
There’s no arguing with this full-throated, Francophone tribute to the victims of November 13’s terrorist attacks in Paris.

6. ANNA KENDRICK’S WEIRD PITCH PERFECT 2 SPEECH
Accepting the award for best soundtrack, Kendrick gave a speech on behalf of the Pitch Perfect 2 cast that was full of biting inside jokes. Better than the usual mind-numbing parade of ‘thank you’s.

7. ALANIS MORISSETTE PERFORMING WITH DEMI LOVATO
‘You Oughta Know’ is 20 years old, and to celebrate, Alanis Morissette teamed up with mug-lover Demi Lovato to belt out the 1995 hit.

8. BIEBER MAKING IT RAIN FOR ‘SORRY’
Presumably that’s not rain, but all Bieber’s tears of contrition since 2012. Looks quite chilly.

9. HOST J-LO DANCING TO ALL 2015’S HITS
‘All 2015’s hits’ is a loose term. To be more specific, this medley includes recent chart favourites ‘Uptown Funk’, ‘Thinking Out Loud’, ‘Trap Queen’, ‘Where Are Ü Now’, ‘BBHMM’ and ‘Bad Blood’. Plus ‘Anaconda’, during which the camera pans over to a bemused Nicki Minaj.
