Has Axl Rose Been Auditioning To Join AC/DC For Over 30 Years?

Unless you’ve been living under a mountain of chocolate for the last few days, you might be quite aware of the current rumours surrounding Axl Rose and AC/DC. Despite gearing up for a massive reunion tour with Slash next month as Guns N’ Roses – last week, a radio DJ from Atlanta, Georgia suggested that the singer could be set to join AC/DC as a temporary replacement for Brian Johnson, who looks set to quit AC/DC following serious hearing problems that will force him to stop touring with the band.

The rumour-mill has since gone into overdrive when the son of Malcolm Young (AC/DC co-founder) ‘confirmed’ that Axl Rose will be joining the band for the remainder of their tour and now both Rose and the remainder of AC/DC, have been spotted at the same rehearsal studio in Atlanta. Fans seem shocked at the news but in fact, evidence suggests that Rose has actually been auditioning for the role for the last 30 years.

According to Setlist.fm, in 1985 G N’ R began paying tribute to the Aussie rockers during their live shows by covering AC/DC’s ‘Whole Lotta Rosie’ and have since played it whopping 117 times during the band’s tumultuous history. Not only that – but when the LA rockers released single ‘Welcome To The Jungle’ in 1987, the B-side was indeed a cover of AC/DC’s ‘Whole Lotta Rosie’.

It’s not the only AC/DC song that Rose has managed to squeeze onto their setlist, ‘Riff Raff’ a deep cut from AC/DC’s 1978 album ‘Powerage’ has also made an appearance in recent G N’ R’s set lists amounting to 41 live performances of the track – six more times than AC/DC have played the track themselves.

If you think it stops there – oh, you’re so wrong. Axl Rose has on several occasions noted that AC/DC were a huge influence on the band when they were writing their debut album ‘Appetite For Destruction’. “There’s certain records and albums that we listen to consistently, and a lot of those are AC/DC, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin and old Alice Cooper” he said in this 1987 interview.

However, in the past he’s also remarked that Queen have been a huge influence on the band, and he’s covered the band several times live. Now, we’re not saying that Axl Rose has been auditioning to become the lead singer for Queen as well, but Adam Lambert might do well to keep an eye on Rose.
