1. Best Coast – ‘How They Want Me To Be’
This one sounds typically Best Coasty – and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. As long as the sun is still shining, Bethany Cosentino’s vocals will be soundtracking my days. Consider this one a thank you gift from the singer, who shared it on her blog. “You guys have been some of the most wonderful fans this past year, and I want to thank each and every one of you for supporting Best Coast”, she wrote. “I am about 99% sure that this song will get re-recorded and changed up a bit and will end up on our second album.” So, go ahead and enjoy this early taster for album two.
2. jj feat. Ne-Yo – ‘We Can’t Stop’
Add this to the unexpected collaboration pile. Swedish duo jj recently teamed up with Ne-Yo for this song, as part of the Adult Swim Singles Program. They actually never met in the process. Apparently, Ne-Yo sent a clip to Adult Swim, who then sent it to jj, who then made an extended remix of it. Well, however it came about, we’re glad it did. In case you’ve missed them, Adult Swim are also offering free tracks from The Tallest Man On Earth, The Rapture and Clams Casino.
3. Foster The People – ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ (Grouplove & Captain Cuts Remix) / Grouplove – ‘Colours’ (Foster The People Remix)
Two of the biggest buzz bands to come out of LA in recent days have surprised us all by remixing each other. (They also had a bit of help from Captain Cuts). And what a lovely gift this was. Grab both remixes for free over at rcrdlbl.com.
4. Ladytron – ‘White Elephant’
Didn’t think this song could sound any more haunting? Throw in some masks, some smoky lighting and some circus mirrors and you’ve got yourself a mini thriller. Watch the video for ‘White Elephant’ (taken from Ladytron’s forthcoming album, ‘Gravity The Seducer’) – and if you can stomach it, download the song for free below.
5. The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – ‘Heart In Your Heartbreak” (Twin Shadow Remix)
The original single from The Pains has been blaring on the NME HQ speakers for ages (and has yet to grow old). That being said, it’s still nice to change things up a bit. Here’s a lovely little rework of ‘Heart In Your Heartbreak’ from Twin Shadow, and it’s about as wonderful as you’d expect. Grab the mp3 from the band’s official website.
6. The Dillinger Escape Plan – ‘Black Bubblegum” (Sergio Vega, Deftones Remix)
For a band that’s been around since the late ‘90s, you’d think they’d have had an official website running. “Dillinger hasn’t even had an official website for about 7 years now because I haven’t had time to even deal with it,” member Ben Weinman wrote…on the band’s shiny new website. So to kick things off, they’re giving away a previously unreleased remix from Sergio Vega (of Deftones, who the band recently toured with for nine weeks).
7. White Denim – ‘Drug’ (Bjorn Remix)
We’ve already raved about White Denim’s new material, so we won’t bore you with how great it is. Instead, we’ll leave you with the band’s thoughts on Bjorn’s remix. Here’s what bassist Steve Terebecki had to say: “I think Bjorn’s remix is better than Slim Thug’s ‘I’m Back feat. Devin the Dude,’ and that’s saying a lot!”

8. Neon Indian – ‘Polish Girl’
Neon Indian sent free download out on their email list on Friday as a weekend gift. If you received it, I hope you enjoyed it over the weekend. If not, it’s still up for grabs (and I’m sure they won’t mind if it becomes a mid-week treat). Redeem using the code “86Q39C” to get your free download of ‘Polish Girl’.
9. Gotye feat. Kimbra – ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ (Bibio Remix)
Ah, the powers of the web. The King of Twitter, Ashton Kutcher, posted this bad boy on his Twitter page, and the interweb went a bit mental for it, pushing it right up to the top spot on The Hype Machine’s Twitter chart. Even though Mr. Kutcher might act like a fool on the big screen, kudos to him on this musical tip. Kimbra might look/sound a bit like Katy Perry, but don’t let that fool you – this is a beautiful duet with an impressive stop-motion animation video (which is tough to make – I’ve tried).
10. Lucy Love – ‘Who Are You’ (OK Formula Remix)
On the lookout for a new female rapstar? Kreayshawn not doing it for you? Why not give Lucy Love a spin. She’s kind of like a dancier Lady Sovereign from Denmark (actually, she’s originally from Zambia). Her brand new single ‘Thunder’ is out in the UK today, and is taken from her forthcoming album ‘Kilo’ (which will be released through her own label, Superbillion Records).
