With Download Festival consuming my weekend, this weekly round-up’s been a bit delayed this week, so apologies. But better late than never – feast your ears on these ten brand new free MP3 downloads.
1. Best Coast – ‘Gone Again’
Just in time for summer, Best Coast released a new track for Adult Swim’s Singles Program, as well as an accompanying video, filled with cat mask-wearing women, shooting at men with guns (with their ammo of choice being sugary sweets). Leave it to Best Coast to sneak in some cats and stoner snacks.
2. The Kooks – ‘The Saboteur’
So Luke and his Kooks are back with a brand new track. They’ve been a bit m.i.a. since releasing their 2008 album ‘Konk’, but the band are getting ready to finally release album number three, ‘Junk Of The Heart’. This one won’t be appearing on the LP, but if the song’s any indication of the direction their new material’s going in, then I think I’ll be pretty pleased.
3. Jay Reatard – ‘You Build Me Up Just to Bust Me Down’
When Jay Reatard passed away last year, we lost a great player in punk/garage rock. At least they’re still uncovering rare, unheard material from him. Memphis-based Goner Records, which gave him his first big record label push, has recently released a compilation of his early music that’s otherwise only available on cassette. The 39-track album, ‘Teenage Hate/Fuck Elvis Here’s The Reatards’, is available now.
4. The Wombats – ‘Techno Fan’ (Diplo Remix)
In the continuing saga of ‘Techno Fan’ remixes (we gave away a great one from Afrojack a few weeks ago), here’s a brand new one from Diplo. They keep getting better, as this is one mega whopper of a dance tune.
5. Hercules & Love Affair – ‘Painted Eyes’ (Radio Edit)
This one sounds so classically Hercules & Love Affair in the best possible way. And props to mixmag for rounding up some killer remixes of the track from In Flagranti and Wolfram to stream.
6. Spank Rock – ‘Energy’ (Produced By Boys Noize)
Spank Rock are back. They’re releasing a new album, ‘Everything Is Boring And Everyone Is A Fucking Liar’ (what a title) this autumn, and this first taste is brilliant. Produced by Boys Noize and sampling Can’s ‘Vitamin C’, this song is one blazin’ banger.
7. Chad Valley – ‘Now That I’m Real’ (Courtship Remix)
If you’ve yet to discover the beauty that is Chad Valley’s music, then now is a good time to do so. He made the cut for our 50 best bands of 2011 so far list (despite being a bloke, not a band), so give this track a spin and find out why we love him. The original track features on his ‘Equatorial Ultravox’ EP, out via Cascine

8. Male Bonding – ‘Bones’
Good news for fans of Male Bonding – they’ll be releasing a new album, ‘Endless Now’, on August 29 – and they’re giving away a preview for the price of an email address now. Fun fact: the album was recorded at Dreamland Recording Studio, the same place The B-52s recorded ‘Love Shack’ and Dinosaur Jr. created ‘Where You Been, Endless Now’.
9. Zowie – ‘Love Or Hate’
She looks like a cross between Jessie J and Gaga, and sounds like a mix of Karen O, Amanda Blank and Prince. She’s a bit of glam pop and a bit of dirty grunge. Check out the self-described “pixie” from New Zealand below, and discover why she’s been recruited to support the likes of Mark Ronson and Katy Perry on tour.
10. Bombé & Mr. Caribbean – ‘James Drake’ (James Blake vs. Drake)
We certainly wouldn’t anticipate a mash-up of James Blake and Drake. Philadelphia-based DJ Bombé teamed up with R&B artist Mr. Caribbean to create this mixtape, merging the two artists together in what Mr. Caribbean calls “a soundtrack for sippin Robitiussun and Alize in an abandoned Cathedral, covered in a velvet blanket with a sexy stranger on a dark night.”
