Rotterdam hosted this year's awards ceremony, featuring DNCE, The Weeknd, Green Day and more
Last night (November 6), the MTV EMAs took over Rotterdam, inviting a host of the world’s biggest pop stars to take over the Dutch city. The likes of Bieber and Gaga might not have turned up, but those who did definitely had a good time. Watch all the best bits from the MTV EMA’s below.
Green Day got political
It may be 12 years old, but ‘American Idiot’ is still painfully relevant now. After playing recent single ‘Bang Bang’, Green Day gave a slightly updated version of the track. In the weighty performance , Billie Joe Armstrong tweaked the lyrics to “Can you hear the sound of hysteria?/The subliminal mind-Trump America“.
Joe Jonas’ new band won the oddly-named Best Push award, and celebrated with a performance of two of their recent singles ‘Body Moves’ and ‘Cake By The Ocean’. There was a little twist to the pop group’s appearance, though, with them playing from a floating stage over the crowd à la Kanye. Hanging high up in the sky didn’t seem to faze them in the slightest as they bounced around and got terrifyingly close to the edge of the rig.
The Weeknd entered the Crystal Dome
Abél Tesfaye’s comeback single (and Daft Punk collaboration) ‘Starboy’ was pretty understated and his performance last night was made to match. That’s no bad thing – especially as he was performing in what looked like his very own version of the Crystal Dome.
Zara Larsson does a great ‘surprise’ face
As one of Europe’s leading new pop stars, everyone else probably expected Zara Larsson to pick up something at the ceremony. Apparently she didn’t because this was her reaction to being named Best New Act in Rotterdam – completely gobsmacked.
MTV punked the talent
How would you react if a Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump lookalike just appeared in your dressing room mirror? Zara Larsson screamed quite a lot, Sway Calloway couldn’t stop laughing and Martin Garrix seemed only a little taken aback.
Bebe Rexha punked Joe Jonas
Bebe Rexha decided to have a little fun with her stint as host, playing pranks on some of the show’s guests. Poor Joe Jonas was her best target having revealed a weakness in his fear of heights (not that you could tell from DNCE’s performance). He seems to completely believe Rexha’s fake health and safety man, even when he pulls out a sexy, studded leather harness that’s clearly intended for something other than keeping intrepid pop stars out of harm’s way.
Lady Gaga hung out with her Pokémon instead
Mother Monster couldn’t make it to Rotterdam to collect her Best Female and Best Look awards, but she did send a cute acceptance video, filled with Pokémon toys and her in a nice, fluffy dressing gown.
