It could have been a wack Bill Gates in the making, but the Microsoft founder smashed it in this daft skit and he and wife Melinda performed on The Tonight Show last night.
Appearing on the show to promote the annual newsletter from their charity foundation, they were asked by host Jimmy Fallon: “Besides this interview, what else would you do to get that out to the people so they would know to check out gatesletter.com?”
“Well”, Gates replied, “it’s really important to Melinda and me, so the answer I would do… anything.” When you’re worth $80 billion, it’s pretty much impossible to embarrass yourself, right?
So there’s a corny swirl fade and we cut to Bill pretending to tear up the decks at a club, wearing the classic EDM club DJ combination of headphones and pink V-neck. Melinda MCs for a bit, before the pair of ’em (see: stunt doubles) hit the dancefloor with what looks to be a cast of extras from Spring Breakers. Probably the best bit is the crestfallen look to camera he gives after we cut back to the studio.
It’s okay, Bill, mate, we know it’s for charity. You gotta do what you gotta do.
All in all, it’s been a pop cultural extravaganza for Bill lately, who gave an interview to Wired and spoke about his namecheck in Beyonce’s latest single ‘Formation’, which features the lyrics: “I could be a black Bill Gates in the making”. Gates said: “I hadn’t realised that she did that until somebody in the office actually sent me a copy of the lyrics and I said, “Are you serious? This is kind of a strange set of words here… I guess it’s nice that people consider me successful.”
And now, on top of it all, he’s gone viral. What a week!
