Actually, we’ve rounded up 21 free tracks for you this week. Go on, get downloading.
1. Black Lips – ‘New Direction’
The Lips’ Mark Ronson-produced album, ‘Arabia Mountain’, comes to the UK this June, but Rolling Stone is giving away an exclusive early taster with the short garage rock track ‘New Direction’. Last year, the band told Pitchfork that they “like to have really good-sounding fuzz” in their music, and that ‘Arabia Mountain’ will be “less muddy” and “a lot better” than their last album ‘200 Million Thousand’. Bring on the fuzz, boys. It’s working.
2. Pete Yorn – ‘Sans Fear’
Here’s a new tune from Pete’s self-titled album, due for release on June 13th through Because Music. The LP was produced by Frank Black, and was recorded in just five days. "Pete told me he wanted to better define himself as an artist. I think he just wanted to rock out,” says Francis. “But as we headed down a path of realisation I stripped him down a whole bunch. We battled in the best sort of way. I tried to get the session into a fearless and raw place". You can also watch the new promo video for the single below, which features a cameo from Darryl Hanah.
3. Youngblood Hawke EP
It’s been a long time since we’ve heard from Iglu & Hartly, who only released one album back in 2008. Member Simon Katz has informed us that the band’s on a hiatus and have no plans for a second record, but Katz and his bandmade Sam Martin have formed a new project called Youngblood Hawke. They’ve just wrapped up recording their six-track EP, and are sharing it on the web for free.
4. The Coathangers – ‘Hurricane’
Atlanta’s The Coathangers are like a punkier, modern-day The Runaways. You can pick up their new album, ‘Larceny & Old Lace’, on June 20th via Suicide Squeeze Records.
5. D/R/U/G/S – ‘Love/Lust’ (FAMILY Remix)
D/R/U/G/S had a busy week, releasing a single, performing at Thursday’s Stag And Dagger Festival in London and supporting Moby at Proud Camden. And there’s gonna be a lot more of him this summer (with sets lined up at Lounge On The Farm Festival, Reading And Leeds Festivals, Bestival, and a few others). Grab this white noise-infused remix FAMILY whipped up this week. But if you’re after a softer remix of ‘Love/Lust’, click here to check out one by Keep Shelly in Athens.
6. SBTRKT – ‘Wildfire’ (Drake Remix)
In case you missed it, there's a free download of ‘Wildfire’, the latest single from SBTRKT, featuring Little Dragon. In an unlikely pairing, Drake’s had his way with the song – and you can snag it for free now. And it looks like Drake’s been pretty busy lately – you can also download his new song ‘Dreams Money Can Buy’ for free over at thefader.com.
7. Minus The Bear – ‘Hold Me Down’ EP
The Seattle-based band fourth album, ‘OMNI’, isn’t due out in the UK until August 23rd – but you can download a free EP with a couple of new tracks and a few recordings live from Dangerbird Studios. Apparently this album, produced by Joe Chiccarelli (My Morning Jacket, The White Stripes, The Shins), will be a “raw take on human sexuality”, and band member Dave Knudson says there’s going to be “a lot more groove, a lot more soul, a lot more feeling that comes across.”
8. jj – ‘No One Can Touch Us Tonight’/’Ice’
Talk about limited edition. Sincerely Yours are giving away two free downloads from Swedish duo jj, but if you’re a physical copy kinda person when it comes to music, you can order the single from the label’s website. But be quick (and rich), as there are only ten copies available, going for €100 a pop. Each one comes with a unique cover, designed by the band and artist Malin Bernalt.
9. Thomas Tantrum – 'Hot Hot Summer' (GWAIIU Remix)
Fan of Chew Lips? Been missing Will Sanderson? He’s back under the alias GWAIIU, and he’s just released his very first remix. Grab his version of Thomas Tantrum’s latest single ‘Hot Hot Summer’ (out June 5th, just in time for the hot hot summer) for free over on Soundcloud.
10. Bonjay – ‘Creepin’ (CHLLNGR Remix)
The latest signing to One Bird Records, Toronto-based duo Bonjay have been popping up on everyone’s new music radar since their performance at The Great Escape. They’ve been remixed by California-via-Copenhagen-based man CHLLNGR (you may recall he produced a remix of The xx’s ‘Islands’ last year). You can get Bonjay’s split-single ‘Stumble’/’Creepin’ on June 6th.
