Blink-182’s Travis Barker On Getting Stoned With Cypress Hill And Teaching Rihanna Drums

Best known for playing drums in Blink-182, heavily tattooed punk Travis Barker has lived a wild life. He’s dated Playboy models, cheated death in a plane crash and worked with everyone from Eminem to Run The Jewels to Rihanna as well as being one music’s most respected drummers. His new book Can I Say has countless stories from his life – here Travis talks NME through five of the most eyebrow-raising moments…

WHEN SUGE KNIGHT FORCED ME TO MARRY PARIS HILTON

“Paris would have huge parties at her house and my friends and I would all go over there. You would see [Death Row Records mogul] Suge Knight. He was always there for whatever reason. Paris and I had been seeing each other and in the middle of partying, being drunk and high Suge was just like, “Y’all need to get married! I’m gonna marry you.” It was like all of our friends around us and Suge wasn’t really a pastor but it was like a hood marriage, it was pretty cool.”

GETTING TOO STONED WITH CYPRESS HILL

“When toured with Cypress Hill and No Doubt, on the last day B-Real approached me and said, ‘Trav, it’s only right we smoke, it’s our last day.’ So I’m getting high and I’m almost like 15 minutes and I’m like, ‘This is fucked, I’m gonna be the only one high on stage, Tom [DeLonge] smokes, so let me go grab him.’ So I go grab Tom. We hit the bong a whole bunch and you lose track of time. I thought we had an hour before we went on and the next thing you know, our tour manager’s knocking on the dressing room going, ‘Yo, Mark’s already on stage, get out there you guys, you’ve got one minute.’ It was the longest fucking show ever, I was so stoned. I remember Tom looked back at me and he’s mouthing to me, ‘I wanna go home’.”

HAVING TO TURN ON MTV TO BUY A CAR

“I don’t dress like I have money. I remember going to this car dealership and I remember the first thing the guy said to me was like, ‘Sir, we don’t have a toilet’ And I was like, ‘No, no, no I’m not looking for a restroom, I’m here to look at cars.’ I was ready to buy the car but nobody would talk to me. Finally, this gentleman called Woody was like, ‘Hey man, come in, I’ll try and help you.’ He had to switch on MTV and Blink’s ‘All The Small Things’ was on. Eventually the staff there believed I actually had the money to buy one of their cars.”

TEACHING RIHANNA TO PLAY DRUMS

“She called me up and said she wanted to play drums during her live show and asked if I would teach her. She’s just so cool. Not needy, not too girly, she’s obviously Rihanna and she’s beautiful and she’s talented but she was a fucking good drummer too, like she caught on so quick; it was a trip. There is a YouTube video of me showing her and she picks up real quick but then fast forward to a month later when I saw a recording of a show and she killed it.”

WALKING DOWN THE AISLE WITH A GUN

“Basically a couple of weeks before the wedding, my wife Shanna was threatened and then it wasn’t like a threat like, ‘Yo, I’m gonna fuck you up,’ it was like ‘Yo, I’m gonna kill you and your family.’ So for after that, I was carrying a gun. The person that threatened her knew where we lived, there were threats and a lot of crazy talking going back and forth. So when I went to my wedding, I was armed and about seven of my groomsmen were armed. I look back and I’m like, ‘Fuck was I high and paranoid?’ I would have felt unsafe not walking down the aisle with something. I remember Tom and Mark were like, ‘What the fuck’s going on with you?’ And I was like, ‘I wish I could explain it.'”
