Oscar season is upon us, and competition is as fierce as ever for the Best Picture prize. The most competitive year ever in the category was 2009, when the number of nominees shot up from the usual 5 to an unprecedented 10.

This year there are eight: credit crunch-themed comedy-drama The Big Short, Cold War spy drama Bridge of Spies, Irish period drama Brooklyn, futuristic, post-apocalyptic action film Mad Max: Fury Road, Matt Damon sci-fi The Martian, Leonardo Di Caprio’s endurance film The Revenant, abuse drama Room and investigative journalism film Spotlight.
