We asked Craig Charles, host of the fantastic Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show on BBC 6Music, to tell us which ten tracks he'd play at the Rovers Return (the fictional pub frequented by Lloyd Mullaney, the character he plays in Coronation Street). This is what he said.
I used to watch my mum and dad dance around the kitchen to it when I could barely crawl.
One of the strongest, sweetest, most raw vocal performances of all time.
Go out and buy it! Check the speed of the band - how can anyone play that fast? Dad used to play it all the time.
I was about 10 and really wished I could grow a beard. He was that cool.
Because I really do wish those days could come back once more.
I remember dancing to this in clubs with my afro and green earring and platform soles. And my Birmingham bags, with the 6-button waist band, thinking it don’t get cooler than this (and I’ve got weak ankles).
Northern soul at it greatest and rarest and most expensive. Who would have thought you’d be in a movement that would grow so strong?
Living in London hanging with the cool cats. Living the dream, thinking I was cooler than ever.
I interviewed her at Maida Vale studios , just before she set the world on fire, thinking she sounded like all the Betty's: Betty Harris, Betty Davis, Betty Smith. I thought she’d last forever. I guess she will.
Just released and never off my decks. It's like Marvin’s dad never shot him.
