While both MIA and Diplo have done well as international ambassadors for baile funk in recent years, the true champion of Rio de Janeiro’s party scene has long been a German journo and DJ called Daniel Haaksman.
He’s been looting Brazil’s favelas for rhythms and MCs for years now, pairing them up with an international roll call of electronic producers that includes Berlin’s Jesse Rose, Paris’ Feadz and London’s Count & Sinden. The result is a transglobal amalgamation of sounds and styles that’s been finally lassoed into a full-length album.
April 16th sees the release of ‘Funk Mundial’, which contains all these collaborations plus work from Haaksman himself and Milan’s Crookers, who you might know best as the people behind that chart-topping remix of Kid Cudi’s ‘Day & Night’.
If you like this get the full album. As a soundtrack to this long hot summer’s hazy parties it’ll last a lot longer than that nasty Calvin Harris track.
