With last month’s ‘Jetstream’ referred to as “an imaginary song for the closing credits on ‘Blade Runner’ and next single ‘Kingdom Of Rust’ labelled “a Lancashire spaghetti western”, you can’t accuse Doves of straying from their cinematic persuasions after a four year hiatus.
So the good news for anyone that hasn’t noticed already is that Doves are back back back and the better news is that they’re still doing what they do best, perhaps preparing to steal some of Elbow’s thunder and shuffle finally into the limelight proper. With their last two albums (unsuccessfully) Mercury nominated, perhaps this could be their year to pick up some silverware too. Oh and it gives us all an excuse to talk about Sub Sub all over again.
And so to the remixes of ‘Kingdom Of Rust’ (the title track from the forthcoming album). The Prins Thomas mix that’s starting to do the rounds is an almost nine-minute epic which stretches that track into its logical Sergio Leonesque conclusion but doesn’t go anywhere too unusual; ours immediately replaces the track’s ponderous stomp for a ‘Lust For Life’ bass line that takes a little getting used to but over five minutes does the song plenty of justice. It’s done by Still Going, who can be found HERE and who also tinkered with !!!’s ‘Yadnus’ – well worth a listen.
