Download Festival 2011 is nearly upon us, which means the summer of metal is about to kick off in full effect. Three days of hard rocking, rowdy rolling and more riffs that your brain can possibly handle.

Sure, we're all excited for the main stage performances from Def Leppard, System Of A Down and Linkin Park... but there are plenty of lesser-known bands also making a play for your time over the course of the June weekend.

Here is my guide to the hidden gems and must-sees of the Donnington park party.

Kvelertak
Saturday, second stage.
Norwegian six-piece playing shreddingly intense metal with heartfelt fury. Get on it!

Malefice
Sunday, second stage.
Reading metallers channelling all the strength and ferocity of the scene's international greats.

Yashin

Glasgow six-piece who impressed crowds at this year's Slam Dunk fest. Prepare for a pummelling.

Ghost
Saturday, Pepsi Max stage.
Swedish noise troop sure to set eyes bulging with their doomy rocking metal stomp and curious on-stage appearance.
