“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet”.
Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet, 1594.
Touching as the above quote may be, the cynical mind of this here blogger is inclined to believe ol’ Willy S may have been a tad nearsighted in such a claim.
You see the Bard clearly hadn’t anticipated the plight of Oregon’s electronic adventurers Pyramiddd, as they endeavour to come up whiffing of the proverbial flower.
Until recently, Portland’s indie poppers were known as Starfucker, and in spite of their name (which licks the ears like an intergalactic pervert) had released an album and garnered an admirable fanbase.
But let’s get one thing clear, sweary names are neither big or clever. Sure, in the history of music there have been bands with risqué names who have managed some success, with recent examples including Fucked Up and Selfish Cunt.
More often than not though, the ‘lets-have-a-naughty-name-and-fuck-the-system’ tact usually leads to the very same two fingers that were raised to the industry being thrust into the band’s face in the way of no airplay, bookings and ultimately – success.
This was not lost on Starfucker, as they recently invited their fans to suggest new names, resulting in the birth of stuttering pseudonym Pyramiddd. Cue a tirade of abuse from many once loyal ‘Starfuckees’ not fond of their favourite rudely-named-electro-pop-band potentially selling out.
But business is business, and yes Pyramiddd might not grab you by the throat in the same way Starfucker did, but it is more accessible to the Radio 1s and MTVs of this world. Sad? Maybe. True? Definitely.
Regardless of what they want to be called, the spritely four piece are touring Europe this month; and with their bouncy Passion Pit esque ‘indietronica’, their fucking star might just rise.
