There comes a point on a sunny Friday afternoon, with the pub tantalisingly close, when the air drumming starts. You don’t really get it at any other time of the week. And it’s noticeable that it’s only the men in the office who do it.
Playing air drums, playing any ‘air’ instrument in fact, is one of those activities that women simply don’t do. It’s undignified.
Anyway, it got us debating the best air drumming tracks – the songs that get you hammering an imaginary ride cymbal in the manner of someone who’s just set himself on fire and is desperately trying to quell the flames.
A bit like this (0.40):
Here are a few we came up with.
The Stone Roses – I Am The Resurrection
Satisfying, but a bit limited perhaps.
Bonnie Tyler – Holding Out For A Hero
This is more like it. Those fills!
Iron Maiden – Run To The Hills
Nice bit of four-on-the-floor kick drum at the start.
Phil Collins – In The Air Tonight
Involves sitting stock-still, before exploding into action at 3.40. Not for beginners.
Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit
The roll on the snare into the chorus: hard to resist joining in.
Rocket From The Crypt – Born In 69
Another song that’s aaaall about the drum rolls.
Public Enemy & Anthrax – Bring The Noise
Air double kick drums, anyone? Probably best attempted in private, this one.
And a few more:
Led Zeppelin – When The Levee Breaks
QOTSA – No-One Knows
Arctic Monkeys – Brianstorm
McLusky – Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues
Squarepusher – Beep Street
Mastodon – Funky Drummer
Mastodon – The Wolf Is Loose
