Here’s a fresh weekly serving of the ten best free downloads on the web this week.
1. Friendly Fires – ‘Blue Cassette’
NME cover stars Friendly Fires are gearing up to release their second album, ‘Pala’, on May 16th. We’ve been throwing out the word “summery” to describe it , and paired with the parrot and their Hawaiian print shirts on the mag cover, it really is. In case you missed it, you can stream ‘Hawaiian Air’ over here, and now ‘Blue Cassette’ is available for a free download over on the band’s website. Swap an email addy for an mp3, and get your summer started.
2. Smashing Pumpkins – ‘Owata’
Welp, Mr. Corgan has just announced that he will "never reform" the band's original line-up, but that isn’t gonna stop him from churning out new music. One of the 44 tracks his band plan to periodically release from ‘Teargarden By Kaleidyscope’ has just been revealed – and you can download ‘Owata’ from their official website now. This is only number 12 in the series, so there’s loads more to come. We’re also told to expect a “new album within an album” titled ‘Oceania’, to be recorded this May.
3. White Denim – ‘Jay Time’ (Hard Stuff Cover)
Their next album, ‘D’, is due out at the end of the month. So ‘til then, enjoy this brand new cover of the 1972 Hard Stuff track, ‘Jay Time’, which they chose because they "thought it necessary to record not only a cover, but a cover that doubles as a vaguely funky vamp." Grab the track from White Denim’s Facebook page, and while you’re at it, follow the band on Twitter - they just joined, so go ahead and give them some love.
4. Fleet Foxes – ‘Grown Ocean’
So it looks like people are still a bit divided on their latest album, Helplessness Blues’. After NME gave the album a 4/10, calling the band “the soy-latte house band of Starbucks”, the masses got a bit pissed off. This song is a gorgeous Fleet Foxes classic in my books, though. Give it a listen and let us know which side of the Foxes debate you’re on.
5. Suuns – ‘Long Division’ (Fugazi Cover)
The Stool Pigeon are giving away an exclusive download of this cover of Fugazi’s classic 1991 track ‘Long Division’ by Canadian foursome Suuns. It occasionally shows up on the band’s live show setlists – stop by their gig at London’s Corsica Studios on May 16th, and you might get to hear it live.
6. The Heartbreaks – ‘Jealous, Don't You Know’ (Hurts Remix)
There hasn’t been much new activity in the world of Hurts lately, but we’re happy to share this broody new remix of The Heartbreaks’ single ‘Jealous, Don’t You Know’ with you. From the second it kicks off, you know you’ve got Hurts on your hands. The original single is out now through the band’s own imprint, Morecambe Rock.
7. 8in8 – ‘One Tiny Thing’
When it comes to joining forces for a musical collaboration, this is the way to do it. Amanda Palmer (of The Dresden Dolls), her hubby Neil Gaiman, Ben Folds and Damian Kulash (of OK Go) met up in Boston to record eight songs in eight hours (8in8, get it?). They only got six done, but we’ll still applaud the effort. You can listen to all six of them over at Amanda Palmer’s Bandcamp page, and can purchase them all for a mere $1. Be sure to watch the stop-motion animation video for ‘One Tiny Thing’, as well. It’s a quality promo video, in true OK Go style.
8. Jessica 6 feat. Antony Hegarty – ‘Prisoner Of Love’
It’s so nice to see some of the former Hercules And Love Affair members back together again. Nomi Ruiz, Andrew Raposo and Morgan Wiley left the band back in 2009, forming a new act called Deep Red. Today, they go by Jessica 6 (after the character from Logan’s Run), and they’ve called in a favour from Mr. Hegarty, another frequent Hercules contributor. And as we all know, pretty much anything he touches turns to musical gold. This track will be on the band’s debut album, ‘See The Light’, due out this June on Peacefrog.
9. EMA – ‘Milkman’
You’ve probably heard the name EMA buzzing around the blogs lately. It’s the solo project from Erika M. Anderson, one half of Gowns. She’s just dropped a new track, ‘Milkman’, which you can find on her debut album ‘Past Life Martyred Saints’ (out today via Souterrain Transmissions). Give the grungy new single a spin over at Stereogum.
10. Vato Gonzales feat. Foreign Beggars – ‘Badman Riddim (Jump)’ (Tru Fix & Thunderskank Remix)
Allow us to introduce you to Ministry Of Sound’s latest signing, Vato Gonzales. The Dutch DJ/producer’s original 2010 instrumentals have been merged with vocals from Foreign Beggars, and then remixed by Tru Fix and Thunderskank. You can score this single on June 19th via Ministry Of Sound/Level Recordings.
