When Glasgow trio Baby Strange first burst out of the traps in 2013, they did so with a spit and a snarl. Running on a discontented rattle full of Clash-style punk and a particularly Scottish sense of raw, bristled ire, the likes of early single ‘Pure Evil’ and 2014’s ‘VVV’ fed on a darkness that belied their youth (all three are not far out of their teens).

Now, the band – fronted by singer Johnny Madden and completed by drummer Connaire McCann and his bass-playing brother Aidan – return to add a little light to their shade. ‘California Sun’ takes the Jesus And Mary Chain model of 60s drumbeats and reverb-tinged guitars and channels it into something more ragged and direct: think Palma Violets with a secret shoegaze fixation. The result is a big, hook-laden anthem to waltz your beau round the indie disco to and a perfectly-pitched return from the trio. See for yourself below.
