I think it was a Kashpoint party circa 2004 when I first realised clubbing can be a lot more fun than slipping up in beer to ‘There’s No Other Way’. Their Dayglo Dickens party took place in some disused house behind Kings Cross and saw the promoters turn the crumbling building into a three storey pleasure warehouse filled to the brim with freaks, cross-dressers, burlesque dancers and assorted other lunatics. No Bra played in a dangerously rammed basement and insane looking people popped from every dark orifice. It was like Studio 54 transported to Caledonian Road and it blew my mind. I left with a face covered in fluro stickers and a vow never to waste a weekend in the Astoria again.
Around that time Horse Meat Disco kicked off, with a pretty similar philosophy. Labelled “the queer party for everyone: homos and heteros, club kids, bears, fashionistas, naturists, guerilla drag queens and ladies who munch”, they’ve spent the last five years perfecting the euphoric night out.
You might have encountered the HMD sound machine at Lovebox, last year’s Bestival or in the most twisted corner of Glastonbury last month, but if not it’s a high-NRG cosmic/camp-disco affair. But we’re talking disco in its purest form, so no Bootsy Collins, KC & The Sunshine Band, or ‘Rock The Boat’. And definitely no Bee Gees, comedy wigs or Clapham estate agents in flares. You might get Chic, but it would be the Todd Terje remix.
It looks a bit like this:
James Murphy’s quite a fan too:
The Horse Meat promoters just made a mix CD for Strut and it’s a voyage to the furthest corners of the disco universe, taking in funk and electro, Italo and Afro and everything in between. It’s out on August 10th and here’s a taster.
