Hot Hot Heat, Kid Cudi, of Montreal, Rex the Dog – 10 Best Free MP3 Downloads This Week

Some comebacks, some remixes, and sneak-peaks of some brand new music. We’ve got the ten best free MP3s of the week, so give them all a good listen and a download.

1. Hot Hot Heat– ‘Goddess On The Prairie’
Hot Hot Heat are back with a new album (‘Future Breeds’) this month, and they’re just in time for summer with this bubbly little love song. Frontman Steve Bays says that this is his first positive love song, and that it was written right before he got engaged. And if you’re curious to learn more about the making of the song, the band also have a behind-the-scenes video, which you can watch below. (Warning: it contains a little blood)

2. CSS – ‘Move (Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head Remix)’
Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head are a fun band. Their songs are about sideways ponytails, beards and melting chocolate, and they run one of the most randomly amusing blogs we’ve ever seen (such as this post, with a crocodile-shaped pickle, celebrating summertime and new songs). They’ve also posted up their new remix of CSS as a Friday treat, which you can grab for free.

3. of Montreal – ‘Famine Affair (live)’
of Montreal’s 11th album, ‘False Priest’, is due out very shortly. They set out on a US tour at the end of May and have already been caught on video playing some new material. In what has been labelled on YouTube as ‘Famine Affair’ (performed live in Columbia, Missouri), we get a glimpse at the new album, as well as some typical of Montreal on-stage acting that probably makes just as little sense to the crowd as it does to us.

4. Lisa Papineau – ‘White Leather Pants’
Leading lady of LA band Big Sir, Papineau has also worked with other acts like M83, Air and P.O.D. – but we’re loving her solo stuff. ‘White Leather Pants’ (from her album ‘Red Trees’) is one sexy song – while background vocals are singing “chicka boom, chicka boom”, her airy vocals swirl around, closing out in a whisper.

5. Kid Cudi feat. Chip the Ripper– ‘All Talk’
Unfortunately for Christian Bale, it doesn’t look like anyone will be forgetting about his infamous on-set rant any time soon – especially now that Kid Cudi used it in his newest release (along with LCD Soundsystem’s ‘Dance Yrself Clean’). Mixed with some verses from Cudi and Chip the Ripper, this is an unexpectedly excellent combination.

6. Tobacco – ‘Six Royal Vipers’
Tobacco’s Tom Fec recently sat down with the Los Angeles Times for an interview (a pretty interesting read if you’re into his former band Black Moth Super Rainbow or want to read about his digital collaboration with Beck). They’ve also made this song off of his latest album Maniac Meat available for free download – and we’ve come to realise that his music just never disappoints us.

7. ceo – ‘Come With Me’
ceo, the solo project of Tough Alliance’s Eric Berglund, will be releasing his debut album, White Magic, at the end of June – and after seeing the fantastically surreal video for this single, we’re really excited for it.

Prepare yourselves for 74 minutes of awesome. DJ Rex the Dog produced this massive mash-up at London’s Old Blue Last last month, and it’s got everything from Donna Summer to New Order to Ghostbusters.

9. New Look – ‘Numbers’
New Look isn’t just a clothing store, it’s also a chilled-out musical duo from Toronto, with a debut LP coming out this summer. They sound a bit like a stripped-down The xx (who they opened for on their European tour).

10. Shark? – ‘School Night’
Brooklyn band Shark? are offering their entire new EP, School Night, for free download (or if you’re feeling generous, a monetary donation). If you like what you hear, catch up on their back catalogue – you can download two of their other albums for free, as well. Give a listen to the grungy rock number ‘Tiny Violin’ below as a taster.
