If you haven’t come across them before, James Chance and the Contortions were a bunch of seminal New York No Wavers that liked to push music, and in particular saxophones, to breaking point.
This kind of stuff:

James Chance recently resurfaced with his European backing band (Les Contortions) for the Matt Groening-curated ATP in May, and he’s now about to release a two-disc collection of studio tracks from his band’s first album and live, unreleased tracks from the ’90s onward. ‘Twist Your Soul – The Definitive Collection’ will be released by Dumb Angel Records on 2nd August 2010 and is pretty essential stuff.
Here’s a taster, the opening track ‘I Can’t Stand Myself’, which was previously only featured on Brian Eno’s No Wave compilation ‘No New York’. Does it make you want to contort?
