Here are the best musical downloads on the web this week, including two EPs, some remixes and some original tracks. Enjoy, and share your thoughts below.
1. John Legend & The Roots– ‘Wake Up’ (Arcade Fire Cover)
Here’s an unexpected cover. The song was performed and recorded at NYC venue Terminal 5, and was directed by Spike Lee. You can watch more of this set, and the others, here.
2. Deerhunter – ‘Helicopter’ (Diplo and Lunice remix)
Our favourite remix of the week comes from Diplo and producer Lunice, an exclusive track from maddecent.com. Diplo posted it on his Twitter account, writing: “Just finished a remix for my cuzin bradford cox aka deerhunter with the legend @Lunice that is straight #cookin #based woooooo!”
3. Badly Drawn Boy– 'It’s What They’re All Thinking' EP
Badly Drawn Boy released his new album, ‘It’s What I’m, Thinking Part One – Photographing Snowflakes’, today. But if you haven’t gotten around to purchasing it yet, or want a sampling of what to expect, you can download this free four-song EP, in exchange for signing up to his mailing list. Badly Drawn Boy will be setting out on a UK tour in October, kicking off at London’s Rough Trade shop tomorrow (October 5th).
4. The Wombats– ‘Tokyo (Vampire and Wolves)’ (Superhumanoids Remix)
The Wombats are returning with a new single and a sold-out tour (with another one coming up in January), and they’re currently in L.A. working on their second studio album. Their single’s been remixed by L.A.-based band Superhumanoids, and you can enjoy it for free until the band’s new album drops. Get this week's magazine for a full interview with the not-so-wacky-nowadays marsupials, including Murph on his addiction to anti-depressants.
5. Starfucker– ‘Julius’
Portland, Oregon-based quartet Starfucker are the latest musical act to join the Polyvinyl family, and they’ve released their first single, ‘Julius’, as a free download. The single will be out on October 11th (along with B-side ‘Helium Muffin’), with a debut album released in early 2011. Fun fact: the single was recorded at the Odditorium (the studio started by fellow Portland band The Dandy Warhols). And why the name “Starfucker”, you ask? Band member Joshua Hodges says: "I like, and have always liked, the idea of seeing what we could do with a stupid name like Starfucker."
6. Scissor Sisters– ‘Any Which Way’ (Tensnake Remix)
As if the original track off the band’s latest album ‘Night Work’ wasn’t hot enough, Hamburg-based DJ Tensnake has kicked it up another notch in the dance-party-inducing scale. Head over to the DJ’s Soundcloud page for some more remixes of Junior Boys, Foals and other exciting artists.
7. Duck Sauce– ‘Barbra Streisand’
Chances are, you’ve already seen the star-studded music video from Duck Sauce (A-Trak and Armand Van Helden), featuring cameos from the likes of Vampire Weekend, Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Santigold, and Todd Terry. But don’t let the video make you forget about how great the track itself is. Get it over at iguessimfloating.net.
8. White Sea – ‘This Frontier’ EP
So every Monday, we look forward to the five free downloads at the Urban Outfitters blog, but this week they’re giving away five tracks from Morgan Kibby, aka White Sea. The on-tour female vocalist for M83 produced her album entirely on her own, and you can download some of the tracks for free. You can also stop by the Urban Outfitters blog for a short interview with the singer.
9. The 1900s – ‘Babies'
Had over to BrooklynVegan for a free MP3 from Chicago six-piecer The 1900s. They’ll be releasing ‘Return of the Century’, a follow-up to their 2007 debut album ‘Cold & Kind’, on November 2nd via Parasol Records. The band will be playing at the Belle and Sebastian-curated ATP in Summerset in December, as well as their own soon-to-be-announced headline tour.
10. Redtrack– ‘Imogen’
The trio released their debut album, ‘Whole Town’s Heart’ on September 13th, and will be making an appearance at Nottingham’s Club NME on October 8th. Head over to Soundcloud for a free download of this punchy punk track (where you can also download their song 'Wait Around').
