I've always had a love/hate relationship with Liars. As is usual with any musicians fervently dedicated to progression and the new, they've veered from absolute genius ('They Threw Us All In A Trench And Stuck A Monument On Top') to wilful contrariness ('They Were Wrong, So We Drowned').
With fifth album 'Sisterworld', though, they might have released their best yet. Recorded back in their birthplace LA it's an attempt to scrape some of the veneer off the city they loathe and yet can't escape, a vicious riposte to the vacuous, driven by lonely harmonies and aggro rhythms - beautiful, paranoid, contentedly demented.
The physical album itself's a masterpiece of merch, a thick card package with concertina peephole photography and a bonus CD of remixes and reinterpretations from Thom Yorke, Devendra Banhart, Fol Chen, Tunde Adembimpe and others. The Melvins' take on 'Goodnight Everything' is particularly great:
