Some thirty years ago, on the other side of the world, a group of like-minded individuals started hanging out and making music together. ​Martin Phillipps, Lesley Paris, the Kilgour brothers and Robert Scott were among the creators of an underground pop scene immortalised by former music store manager Roger Shepherd on his Flying Nun Records. It went on to become the greatest independent record label New Zealand has ever seen, spawning a vital legacy still felt to this day. And from the haunting melodies of The Chills to the poetic lyricisms of The Verlaines and the punk of Shayne Carter’s early incarnation Bored Games, its aesthetic was certainly a varied one.
