Listen To Richard Ashcroft’s Mournful Cover Of Prince’s ‘Little Red Corvette’

Up until three months ago, many fans thought that they had seen the last of Richard Ashcroft – the former Verve frontman had been dormant since his poorly received collaborative album ‘United Nation Of Sound’ in 2010.

But, as announced in our exclusive interview in February, Ashcroft is back. New music followed (the brilliant ‘This Is How It Feels’) and we welcomed the return of one of Britain’s cult music figures. Ashcroft releases his fourth solo album ‘These People’ today, which we called a ‘churning maelstrom of death, riots, revolution, terrorism and two-faced politicians’ in our review, and earlier this morning he visited Chris Evans’ Radio 2 Breakfast Show to showcase some acoustic versions of the album’s singles.

To close out the show, Ashcroft performed a mournful version of Prince’s hit ‘Little Red Corvette’. Prince died almost a month ago in his Minnesota complex, and since the tributes have continued to roll in from many of music’s biggest names, including Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney and now Ashcroft. In Richard’s version, the glitzy synths of the original are discarded in favour of a powerful acoustic strum and booming, baritone vocals.
