Within hours of Prince’s death yesterday, it felt like the entire planet had turned a shade of purple. In London, cinemas and theatres from Brixton to Stoke Newington changed their signs to honour him, while lighting techs at gigs across the globe were instructed to bathe their stages in purple – sets from Grimes to Noel Gallagher to The 1975 were transformed.
Then there were the street parties – the people of Minneapolis, obviously, turned out in their droves, while in New York an estimated five thousand people partied like it was 1999, led by Spike Lee and trailed by every major news source in America:
