Los Angeles Special #4 - The Psych-Rockers (Free MP3s From Crystal Antlers, Sleepy Sun)

California is a queer place - in a way, it has turned its back on the world, and looks into the void Pacific. It's sort of crazy-sensible. Just the moment: hardly as far ahead as carpe diem. D.H. Lawrence

Ok, so with bands spanning the state from Long Beach to Santa Cruz, this is pushing the already sprawling boundaries of "LA" well beyond breaking point, but it's either that or focus on the Dum Dum Girls lo-fi mafia. And while they're fine, this lot are infinitely more fun, and epitomise the post-millenial embers of Southern California psychedlia pretty nicely.

Crystal Antlers

Sleepy Sun, reviewed in this week’s US Indie special, keep the patchouli and peyote fires of the ‘60s burning, shamelessly sporting paisley and crafting long, drawn-out stoned/freaked out hybrids.

Crystal Antlers, meanwhile, uphold Comets On Fire’s freeform legacy, and have been working in the Mexican desert on more weirdness due out this summer. Hear more about their sessions, the Long Beach scene, avoiding hair metallers on Sunset and the difference between East and West Coast America on the video interview below.

Also worth checking out: Residual Echoes, who brings a punk rock take on the wah-wah fuzz-filled noise, Howlin' Rain and Magic Lantern plus, beyond LA, all this lot from my eMusic dozen.
