Our weekly round-up of the ten best downloads on the net right now
1. Lykke Li – ‘Sadness Is A Blessing’ (Gold Panda Remix)
Ok, this is a collaboration we can definitely get behind. Gold Panda isn’t just a hilariously talented master of Twitter, but he’s also pretty good at making remixes, and here’s a perfect example. His pulsing beats, her lingering vocals – we dig.
2. Fucked Up – ‘A Little Death’
These guys are on fire with new releases lately. Pink Eyes and his gang have unveiled another tune from the 18-track rock opera ‘David Comes To Life’ (out in June via Matador). The second of four digital singles to be released, this one’s “urgent tone plays against an underlying tale of resignation and defeat”, according to Matador. Song number three is scheduled to hit the web on April 26th.
3. Is Tropical – ‘The Greeks’
It’s kind of hard to believe that they still haven’t released a proper album, with all their music that's already out there. But we’re only two months away now – the trio’s debut album will drop June 13th via Kitsuné Maison. Grab a free download of the first official single, ‘The Greeks’, listen to it on repeat about 50 times, then stop by the label’s Easter Special night at London’s Heaven venue on April 24th, where you can catch the likes of Is Tropical, Delphic, Aeroplane and Roisin Murphy.
4. The Botaniks feat. Bernhoft – ‘Fond of Jane’
Here’s one more act from Norway that really needs to be on your new music radar. They describe themselves as a “twin-head-mutant from the post-nuclear global wilderness” and their press shot looks like the stuff Tim Burton dreams of, but regardless, this song is so, so cool from the get-go.
5. The Antlers – ‘Every Night My Teeth Are Falling Out’
The second full-length from The Antlers, ‘Burst Apart’, is due out June 13th through Transgressive Records. They’ve already uploaded the hauntingly airy track ’Parentheses’ to their Soundcloud page, but now you can download this other piece of the album over at Stereogum. A bit less falsetto and a bit heavier, this is shaping up to be one eclecticly excellent album.
6. Handsome Furs – ‘What About Us’
This one's from married couple Handsome Furs (who have a rather strange/dysfunctional/awesome relationship, according to this new press shot). The duo's second album ‘Sound Kapital’ (out this June through Sub Pop) is apparently their first album written entirely on keyboards, and was inspired by electronic and industrial music of ‘80s Eastern European music.
7. Purity Ring – ‘Loftcries’
We’ve already told you how great their first single ’Ungirthed’ is, and now its B-side is available for free download, as well. If you’re more into physical copies (or have been inspired by Record Store Day), you can get the two-track single on April 25th, through Transparent Records.
8. SPIN Presents Whoachella
South By Southwest came, saw and conquered. Glasto already sold out. Coachella’s just wrapped up in sunny California. Festival season is nearly here, people. And if you didn’t make it to Coachella, you can download a free ten-track playlist from SPIN.com, featuring some of the key performers of the weekend. It’s got !!!, Glasser, The Chemical Brothers, Cut Copy, Erykah Badu PJ Harvey and more. Go listen and pretend you’re there.
9. Thieves Like Us – ‘Your Love Runs Still’
Admittedly, if you’re not familiar with this Paris-based trio, the vocals take a bit of getting used to. Upon first listen, the monotony of it kind of grated on my ears. And then it sort of won me over, and then I kind of fell in love with it. ‘Your Love Runs Still’ is from their forthcoming EP, due out this May via Captured Tracks
10. TV Girl – ‘If You Want It’
You can actually get the full four-track EP from this San Diego-based pop duo over on their official Facebook page, but this is the song most worth showcasing. They’ve also teamed up with fellow San Diego-ites Dirty Gold, covering each other’s songs - so you can also get TV Girl’s cover of ‘On Land’ on this EP. In the words of TV Girl, “the result is positively breath-taking.”
