The latest round-up of the ten best free downloads from across the web
1. Memory Tapes – ‘Wait In The Dark’
Treat yourself to the second offering from Dayve Hawk’s forthcoming album, ‘Player Piano’, out July 4th via Something In Construction Records. As a Jersey girl, I can say – music from New Jersey never disappoints. You can catch Hawk performing songs like ‘Wait In The Dark’ while he’s over in the UK this July.
2. Niki And The Dove – ‘The Fox’
The Scandanavians have been taking London’s music scene by storm lately, and Niki And The Dove are no exception. Hailing from Stockholm, the duo bring a rare breed of nature-filled “fairytale pop”, as they call it. “I’m very into singing about nature and the images that come to you in a vision,” singer Malin Dahlström told NME. So head over to nylonmag.com for a free download of ‘The Fox’ and find out what exactly it is that she means.
3. Jamie Lidell – ‘Completely Exposed’ (Beck Remix)
Beck’s been pretty busy lately collaborating with his musical buddies, and you can download his most recent project for free now. He’s remixed Jamie Lidell’s ‘Completely Exposed’ (the first track from his 2010 album ‘Compass’). Grab the track over on Jamie’s website, in exchange for an email address.
4. Austra – ‘Lose It’
Good luck trying to interpret Austra’s new promo video for their latest single ‘Lose It’. Looks like someone went a bit special-effects-happy with the editing, and for some reason there’s a person growing out of the floor. But we can’t knock the song and Katie Stelmanis’ deeply soul-chilling vocals. ‘Cause they’re ace. Get Austra’s debut album, ‘Feel It Break’, on May 17th through Domino Records.
5. The History Of Apple Pie – ‘Tug’
The Emerge NME Radar Tour act most likely to make you hungry also make some pretty good music. Don’t believe us? Download ‘Tug’ for free. If you like what you hear and want to see them live, it’s not too late. Click here to purchase tickets for the Radar tour’s final stop at London’s KOKO venue on Tuesday.
6. Living Things – ‘Malocchio’ Mixtape
After splitting ties with Jive Revords, the Missouri alt rockers have established their own record label imprint, through which they’re planning to release a 27-track triple-disc record by October. But until then, the guys have unveiled a free seven-track mixtape you can download for free on their website. It’s a gorgeous and eclectic batch of tracks that really showcase how varied their sound has become over the years. Be sure to stop by spin.com to watch the band’s haunting new video for the song ‘Pollen Path’, starring frontman Lillian Berlin’s daughter.
7. The War On Drugs – ‘Baby Missiles’
The War On Drugs were put to the test when Kurt Vile left the group to pursue his solo career. But after hearing ‘Baby Missiles’, the lead track from the band’s new album (the first without Vile), we can safely say that they’ve proven themselves worthy of our ears still. You can get the band’s new LP ‘Slave Ambient’ on August 16th through Secretly Canadian.

8. The Kills – ‘Satellite’ (The Bug Remix)
The Kills wowed us with their latest album ‘Blood Pressures’. Since the whirlwind’s died down a bit since its release, we’re happy they’re stirring things up a bit with this new remix of their single ‘Satellite’. In honour of Record Store Day, the track was remixed by Mad Professor & Joe Ariwa, and now there’s a new rework by producer The Bug. Stay tuned for the band’s next single, ‘Future Starts Slow’, out June 27th.
9. O’Death – ‘Bugs’
Continuing with the theme of bugs, here’s the latest single from New York quintet O’Death. They’re returning after a two-year break, triggered by drummer David Rogers-Berry’s Osteosarcoma diagnosis. Ten months of chemo and a shoulder replacement did the trick, though, and these guys are now ready to hit the stage again this summer at July’s Newport Folk Festival. Download the band’s new song ‘Bugs’ for free now, and pick up their third album ‘Outside’ later this year.
10. Stag And Dagger Mixtape 2011
Planning on stopping by Stag And Dagger Festival this week? On Thursday May 19th, six London venues will be hosting a slew of live performances, this year featuring the likes of Wire, Toro y Moi, New Young Pony Club and James Yuill.
