NME Exclusive – Brody Dalle, ‘Meet The Foetus’

Since former The Distillers and Spinerette frontwoman Brody Dalle announced she was going it alone to make her first solo album, we’ve been desperately and impatiently waiting to hear it. ‘Meet The Foetus’/ Oh The Joy’, the first fruits of that now completed record, makes that long wait worthwhile – a triumphant return inspired by the birth of Brody’s children, recorded with QOTSA and Arctic Monkeys collaborator Alain Johannes and featuring Garbage’s Shirley Manson on backing vocals. It’s not quite the in-your-face punk that formed some of The Distillers’ finest moments but its buzzsaw guitars, gleaming melodies and heartfelt lyrics hint that Brody’s moved on leaps and bounds from those days. “You have sailed through the eye of my needle/A perfect parasite burgeoning Eden,” she sings before declaring “Sh-sh-shot through the heart, baby/I’m gonna love you forever.” Pure poetry. It also has Emily Kokal (Warpaint) and Shirley Manson (Garbage) on backing vocals.
