Premiere – Spector Turn On The Sardonic Wit For New Tune ‘Bad Boyfriend’

London four-piece Spector are going through something of a career reinvention at the moment, and today they follow their ’80s-tinged comeback single ‘All The Sad Young Men’ with the wry charm of ‘Bad Boyfriend’. Despite the titular nod, it’s sadly only in the very loosest sense that the song can be considered a spiritual successor to Princess Superstar’s seminal (in every sense) 2002 smash hit ‘Bad Babysitter’. Instead, it’s a verbose dissection of the protagonist’s psyche, with bon mots like: “I’m a good listener when it’s just me talking” and “You think you’re lonely now, wait till we’re alone”.

Frontman Fred Macpherson told us more:

“So many people I know (myself included) are selfish and pre-occupied with the wrong things. And though the internet’s meant to connect us, it feels like people are just getting more alienated, worrying about Instagram likes more than interacting with their fellow humans. A while ago my ex-girlfriend was pointing out how terrible I am, and I was just sitting there checking my phone and thinking about whether my band’s songs were good enough. I probably should have taken her thoughts on board and tried to better myself as a person, but instead I wrote ‘Bad Boyfriend’.”

The single will officially released on June 8. A few days later on June 11, Spector will play their third London show of the year on June 11th at the Dome. Fan pre-sale starts 9am Wednesday April 15th, at Spector.co.uk. Tickets on general sale Friday 17th April from 9am priced at £12.
