S.C.U.M., Roots Manuva, Baxter Dury – 10 Best Free MP3s This Week

Here’s a brand new heap of free music to start your week

1. S.C.U.M – ‘White Chapel’ (Light Asylum Remix)
Things are busily buzzing in the S.C.U.M. camp lately. Rhys Webb (The Horrors)’s lil’ bro’s band will be heading out on the road with Wolf Gang, Niki And The Dove and DZ Deathrays for the Emerge NME Radar Tour this October, and their debut album ‘Again Into Eyes’ is due out on September 12th via Mute. They’ve also just released a brand new remix of their single ‘White Chapel’ by Brooklyn-based duo Light Asylum – which can be all yours for free right now.

2. Roots Manuva – ‘Watch Me Dance’
You’re probably already familiar with Toddla T’s version of this track (which also features Roots Manuva), but let’s not forget that it began its life as a Roots tune. So go ahead and enjoy ‘Watch Me Dance’ in its true, originally organic form. You can find this one on his forthcoming album ‘4everevolution’.

3. Of Montreal – ‘Black Lion Massacre’
of Montreal are known for being a bit…wacky. This track may just sound darkly haunting on the surface – but scrape a bit deeper and you’ll find lyrics about people pissing on each other, masturbating in their front yards, barfing in public fountains and gouging out eyes of reptiles and “mutilated fish”. Only the sick, twisted mind of Kevin Barnes could make this sound so good…

4. Blitzen Trapper – ‘Love The Way You Walk Away’
Want some good ol’ fashioned folk from Oregon? It’s bursting at the seams with Dylan-esque vocals and, in the words of frontman Eric Early, evokes “a true American nostalgia.” Catch this one on the band’s new album ‘American Goldwing’, out this September (and download it for free now courtesy of Sub Pop Records).

5. Baxter Dury – ‘Leak At The Disco’
If you’re utterly bored, then head on over to Baxter’s website. Not only is there a free download of a track off of his brand new album ‘Happy Soup’ (to ease your bored ears), but there’s also a fun game of Baxman (aka Pac-Man) available (just click on the little yellow duck to launch it). Enjoy!

6. Brite Futures – ‘Baby Rain’
R.I.P. the days of Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head. It was a bizarrely beautiful band name while it lasted. But the members have grown up and re-dubbed themselves Brite Futures. Although the name seems a bit lame in comparison (albeit the old one was hard to beat), this brand new release proves they’ve in no way lamed up their lyrics (“One thing leads to another/And soon you’ve got a brother/That’s how you make a baby”). Throw all your serious cares away and prepare for some ridiculously brilliant words.

7. The Loud – ‘Amy’s Gonna Get You’
In their press release, these guys are described as T.Rex with a “post-punk facelift”, and they’ve made appearances with the likes of Echo And The Bunnymen and Iggy Pop. Well, that’s enough of a glam goodness linkage to lure me in. Enjoy this NME.com exclusive download and preview the trio’s forthcoming debut LP, ‘Harris Shutter’ (out September 26th via Payper Tiger Records).

8. Matt And Kim – ‘Block After Block’ (Echoes Club Remix)
So the video for Matt And Kim’s latest single ‘Block After Block’ makes me a bit homesick (ah, those were the days – dancing around Union Square). We’ve been given the first access to Echoes Club’s remix – which swaps the drums and clapping for a bit of synth action – and you can download it for free over on Soundcloud now. ‘Block After Block’ is from the Brooklyn duo’s album ‘Sidewalks’ (out now via Different Recordings).

9. Eagulls – ‘Possessed’
Back in April, we called this Leeds crew this potential ”future of post-hardcore”, and in last week’s issue of NME, we named them one of the 25 best new bands you need to hear. Download a free mp3 of the scratchy, dirty riff-filled ‘Possessed’ and find out why we love them so much.

10. Humans – ‘Avec Mes Mecs’
Ever wanted to don some weird face paint resembling either frosting or a topical medical cream, jump on a party bus, bring said party to your entire town, crash on a beach and get discovered by some strange Muppet-like cops? Well, Vancouver-based duo Humans make that happen in their video for ‘Avec Mes Mecs’. And with a song featuring lines like, “Who knew that all we had to do was party?”, this is certainly destined to end up on your next party playlist.
