Star Wars: Where The Hell Is Luke Skywalker? These 5 Crazy Fan Theories Might Have The Answer

The web is abuzz with weird fan theories about what on earth has happened to Luke Skywalker. The most recent cause for concern was the Force Awakens poster, released yesterday (October 18). Like the film’s previous two teasers, it didn’t show any sign of Luke. Where is he? What’s he doing? Ahead of the final movie trailer, which drops later tonight on ESPN, here are five of the internet’s weirdest suggestions.

1. HE’S LOST ON A DESERT PLANET
Origin: Birth.Movies.Death.
Gist: Luke Skywalker’s severed hand and lightsaber – lost to his baddie daddy Darth Vader in 1980’s Empire Strikes Back – are tumbling into the path of Force Awakens’ main characters, Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega). Supposedly, after finding bits of Luke, the pair then go on a quest with Han Solo and Chewbacca to find the rest of him.
Likelihood: 1/5

2. HE’S GONE TO THE DARK SIDE
Origin: Star Wars News Net
Gist: As anyone who’s seen a Batman film or two will know, good guys shouldn’t kill their nemeses, like Luke did at the end of Return Of The Jedi. Without the evil Emperor to fight against, Luke faces existential crisis, becomes mad and evil, and according to this theory, kills his old pal Han Solo.
Likelihood: 1/5

3. HE’S LIVING IN SELF-IMPOSED EXILE
Origin: Making Star Wars
Gist: Luke’s done something apocalyptic and unforgivable with the Force. Not wanting to make the same mistakes as his dad, he’s hidden away from society while his sanity slowly seeps away. It’s up to Force Awakens‘ new heroes (Rey & Finn) and villains (The Knights of Ren) to reawaken his interest in galactic affairs, for good or ill.
Likelihood: 4/5

4. HE’S PROTECTING AN ANCIENT SITH TOMB
Origin: Making Star Wars
Gist: The Force Awakens‘ new Vader, Kylo Ren, is going around collecting artefacts with his group The Knights of Ren. Luke’s old lightsaber (the one he lost in Episode V) was once Darth Vader’s, and supposedly has the power to open an evil-housing Sith tomb.
Likelihood: 3/5

5. HE’S BEING HELD IN CAPTIVITY BY EVIL FOLKS
Origin: StarWarsFanpedia
Gist: Some bad guys are planning to use Luke’s Jedi powers to activate a ‘planet-based weapon’ that has the power to destroy entire star systems – making him a more potent version of the Death Stars he went to such lengths to destroy. That’s how irony plays out in Star Wars: with the deaths of billions of life-forms.
Likelihood: 2/5
