Stream Noah & The Whale’s New Album ‘Last Night On Earth’

While February 2011 has been all about Mumford & Marling and their awards performances and wins, March looks set to be very much Noah & The Whale’s month.

Next Monday (7th) sees the release of their third album ‘Last Night On Earth’ and as you’ll probably have guessed from previously released tracks ‘L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N.’ and ‘Wild Thing’, it’s a pretty special affair.

More confident and perhaps more mature than anything they’ve released to date, it’s a hugely life-affirming LP from the get-go. The opening trio alone would spark a corpse back to life – ‘Life Is Life’ is a synthy builder that bursts into full arm-in-arm euphoria, ‘Tonight’s The Kind Of Night’ thrums along at a Springsteeny pace and will invoke outbreaks of chest-pumping when deployed at a certain time of night, and you already know the effects of ‘L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N.’.

Gone is the twee (a thin criticism even at the time) and much of the folk – it takes until track six for an overt fiddle to make its entrance. In come shadows of Tom Waits and Lou Reed, third person narratives and cinematic lyricism, the latter exemplified best by ‘Wild Thing’, a track Charlie Fink has said he wanted to have a Twin Peaks feel.

And big choruses abound. In fact, you can expect a few of these tracks to become as omnipresent as ‘5 Years Time’ by summer. Just don’t blame it on the band. They say: “Our third album is adventurous like its journey from Bethnal Green synagogue via the Thames riverbank across the Atlantic, the United States and all manner of Los Angeles neon-lighted highways. But it is unmistakably Noah and the Whale.”
