The Best Winter Songs?

With fresh snow comes unique iPod playlist challenges: which version of ‘Let It Snow’ to go for, for example: the Dean Martin, Boyz II Men or (Christ alive, it’s awful) McFly version?

But what are the ultimate winter songs? We’re talking about tracks that evoke the magical feeling of Christmas time and watching snow settle, but also those that encapsulate bleak, grey skies and the deathly feeling of trees without leaves and long dark nights.

Bon Iver’s dazzling album, recorded in a log cabin, somehow manages to manifest both of those emotions. Which is probably why it is so universally acclaimed and loved.

Julian Casablancas’ karaoke-esque effort from last year aims squarely at the first, with a fist full of mince pie and sherry.

Fleet Foxes’ White Winter Hymnal combines Beach Boys-esque melodies with an almost religious-sounding chant of, “I was following the pack, all swallowed in their coats, with scarves of red tied around their throats, to keep their little heads, from falling in the snow.”

Recent NME coverstar Elliott Smith delights with the delicate and romantic ‘Angel In The Snow’, a strangely sad song made for fireside listening:

More greats: Sigur Rós – ‘Svefn g Englar’, Low – ‘Last Snowstorm Of The Year’ and White Stripes – ‘Cold, Cold Night’.
