The Best Performances From BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend In One Handy Blog

The lineup for Radio 1’s Big Weekend quite often reads like a dream festival scribbled by a daydreaming teenager in the back of their school textbook, a far-ranging list of massive names this year including Coldplay, The Weeknd, Biffy Clyro, Tame Impala, Mumford & Sons, The 1975, Ellie Goulding, Bring Me The Horizon, Catfish and the Bottlemen… They all descended upon Exeter for the moveable annual festival happening each May.

Being a BBC endorsed festival, the coverage of it was both stellar and extensive, and if you missed any of it, don’t fret. You can catch up on the performances on iPlayer and YouTube. Check out some of the weekend’s best performances below.

The Last Shadow Puppets – ‘Miracle Aligner’
Some fans might think Alex Turner’s gone nuts, but there’s no doubt that his set with partner in crime Miles Kane was a highlight of this year’s festival.

Years & Years – ‘King’
Barely a year removed from their debut album ‘Communion’, the brilliant dance-pop band are on a victory lap of this summer’s festivals. Just look at all those sunburnt faces in the crowd.

Skepta – ‘Man’
Konnichiwa’ looks set to be one of Grime’s most important releases ever, and single ‘Man’ is poised to dominate festival tents all summer long.

Biffy Clyro – ‘Mountains’
Although it is completely absurd to have a band with seven albums to headline the ‘In New Music We Trust’ Stage, seeing Biffy in a relatively small tent was a welcome change from the bonafide headline slots they now command.

Tame Impala – ‘Let It Happen’
The crowd might be shockingly static, but Kevin Parker and band submitted a pounding rendition of ‘Currents’’ crowning moment in spite of them. Roll on Glastonbury, we say…

Catfish and The Bottlemen – ‘Soundcheck’
Their wait for new album ‘The Ride’ is over, and Catfish have followed it up with a festival headline slot as well as a newly announced arena tour. So 2016 looks set to be Catfish’s year and this performance of ‘Soundcheck’ could give us some clues as to why.

Coldplay – ‘Hymn For The Weekend’
Chris Martin claims he was conceived not far away from the festival site (which he revealed during Coldplay’s headline slot), so think of Sunday’s performance as a homecoming of sorts.
