Don’t hold your breath, count your chickens, or run screaming to the beach in a two piece just yet, buuut, it looks like summer might be officially: go. Here comes the sun, for some hot fun in the summer time, all summer long, and other such seasonal things. So with thoughts turning to the great outdoors and long hazy days zoned out in a catatonic bliss we’ve put together a list of the 50 Best Summer Songs Ever.

Friendly Fires NME shoot

It ‘s the playlist we’d take to the beach / festival / pool party to get things going and it covers everything from your obvious classics (Lovin’ Spoonful, Mungo Jerry, Beach Boys) to the more modern choices (Friendly Fires and Memory Tapes, whose excellent new album ‘Player Piano’ is on in the office as we type) via the likes of Snoop, Will Smith, Sly Stone, QOTSA and a couple of guilty pleasures.

While your obvious entry usually mentions the sun, the sea, getting ripped, getting laid, surfing, dancing or a combo of all of the above, a good summer tune can be found where any big, bright, life-affirming melody is present.

So whether you’re wasting away in Margaritaville or sipping on gin and juice, what do you put on to get sunburnt?
