After a 14-year wait since the last series, iconic ’90s sci-fi show The X-Files is landing back on our screens. Everyone’s favourite on-again/off-again FBI agents, troubled believer Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and sensible sceptic Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), will return later this month – this time on Channel 5 – to investigate more paranormal activity.

They were an item when we last met them but, according to hints from show creator Chris Carter, are estranged at the start of the new series, so you can expect things to get heated. Yet while The X-Files, which originally ran for nine seasons and two movies (1998’s brilliant Fight The Future and 2008’s disappointing I Want To Believe) was hooked around Mulder and Scully’s will-they-won’t-they romance, they weren’t the only characters that made the show must-see TV.

There was also FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi), who oversaw the X-Files and was at once a paternal figure and a threat to Mulder and Scully’s investigations. And who could forget The Cigarette-Smoking man – aka The Smoking Man, aka Cancer Man – an exceedingly-shady figure that had fingers in all sorts of pies and was embroiled in The Syndicate, an organisation hell-bent on covering up an impending alien invasion of Earth.

But which of these four compelling characters do you identify with the most? Are you a believer, a sceptic, an authority figure or an outright wrongun? The truth is in our quiz…
