Gonjasufi lives on his own in a compound in the desert just outside Los Angeles. Like many people that do the same, he has spent a great few of his years on earth completely dependent on drugs. So much so that all he did for some time was sit around all day and take them.

These days his only real obstructive dependancy is on yoga. He absolutely bloody loves it. So much, he told NME recently, that he passed up collaborating with J Dilla because he had to complete a yoga course. True story.

Gonja – It came from the desert.

He knocks about with Flying Lotus and Gaslamp Killer, that kinda clique, but the ilk of sludgey, fizzy beats he makes remind me more of first album Clouddead style leftfield hip hop. How he’d take that comparison I don’t know. A couple of years back at Sonar I ended up getting introduced to FlyLo whilst I was a bit of a mess. I remember profusely insisting to him that I couldn’t listen to his new album without thinking of Massive Attack’s ‘Protection’, under the impression that he’d take that as some revelatory kind of compliment. He didn’t. He hated it, and me. Oops.
